ChickChick Update.

What a week. Especially the past two days. This is another update on ChichChick. We have started to make moves, I think the only thing holding us right now is finding the right place.

The places I got to look at are lacking in environment. I don’t know if it’s because of the budget but I’m thinking of opening my options and optimising if possible. The places I have been to see are - for the lack of better words - terrible.

It’s either too isolated or it’s too open. I need these chicks safe and sound, healthy too. Which brings me to something I discovered yesterday.

My cousin came in from Jos to stay a few days with us and thanks to her, I met with someone who’s been in the poultry business for ten years. It’s what their family does and he said at the moment, there is no profit in poultry. It’s why they had to pause doing it to focus on their other businesses (mostly livestock and farming).

He said that the cost of things are way higher now which I’m aware of but he also said I should bear in mind that out of the 30 chicks I plan to buy, 5-7 may not lay. These are the brooders. He said I would be spending more than I would be gaining especially with their medicine that costs very much at the moment.

He also spoke about formulars for their growth. Apparently, there is a way to speed up the growth process and it would take startegic execution if it would work. He also pointed out how that is a tested and trusted technique for chicken breeds such as Layers.

I listened to him talk and nodded. I think I am aware of these concerns right now. That’s why I’m starting small scale to watch and observe them. To also calculate and monitor the expenses and whatever we make after we start selling the eggs. I understand that there may be very little profit but the main objective right now is to start.

Now, with all these major concerns laid out, I have to be cautious but doesn’t mean I should be negative. I have never really gone into anything regarding livestock or farming but there is a first time for everything. The cold season is fast approaching and I’m worried they won’t survive if we don’t start now.

I have a series of things to deal with this week and the major business is sorting out the space for rent. I have to put more fire on the agent to act faster and more diligently in sourcing for a place.

Honestly, I have places in mind but they are way too far from me but they would have been perfect in terms of space and security.

Moving forward, the main focus right now is space. A secure place in a good environment. I’ll keep updating with each new thing I find of discover. I’m learning too as I do this.

Well just as you said, there is a first time to everything and since you have received some advice from your cousin's friend I believe you will do the needful with the Informations you were given.

Poultry farming ain't easy just as he said but you might be lucky for things to move smoothly for you 👍

The woman king herself! All the best with your Chickchick, Rara. It’s a good thing that you are expecting the worst while working to get the best. Hopefully things will be just okay for you. And most importantly, hopefully you can get a good place to rent.
