What Would I Tell Them, Anyway?

The other day, I had somebody remark on the fact that they never seemed to see me post on Facebook anymore.

That is — in fact — true, just like it is true that I pretty much never post on Twitter/X, Instagram, YouTube or any other conventional social media anymore.

Well, at least it's 90% true. The other 10% applies to a couple of my creative businesses which I do still use Facebook and other social media to promote. That's not for amusement's sake, however, it's for income's sake.

Truth be known, I pretty much turned my back on traditional social media in 2016 because I was precisely looking for something like Hive (or its predecessor) that had more of an emphasis on writing actual articles and personal essays than just sharing an out-of-focus image and a few words about the taco I ate for dinner.

Which brings me to my point about Facebook and Twitter and so forth: what would I tell people there, anyway?

It's a crowd I feel like I have nothing in common with.

I don't really have any incendiary opinions about what some movie star wore to some awards show that I didn't watch, and I don't really have any incendiary political laundry that I want to air out there to see how many people I can get to become really stirred up and angry at me.

I know that's the sort of posting practice that gets some people really fired up and excited about their lives, but that just doesn't happen to be me.

Perhaps the closest I get to mainstream social media is occasionally posting and sharing some pictures of our cats! But that's what the Internet is for, right? Sharing pictures of cats?

I just was never a fan of the whole "social popularity contest" atmosphere that started when Myspace and Facebook came along. It was no longer about what you actually had to say, it was about how many people you could get to put a thumbs up on what you said. As a result, posting became more and more gimmicky and less and less substantial. And interesting.

It all serves as a pervasive reminder that I was never really interested in the same thing that "the majority of the world" was interested in. That seemed to apply regardless of whether it was top-40 radio when I was in college, or having "popular" hobbies to pursue during my spare time.

Bottom line: I am just not posting on Facebook or elsewhere because it just doesn't seem relevant to me. And I just don't buy into the whole notion that I will somehow be "left behind" if I'm not part of the social media circus. I don't need to post on Facebook, Insta or Tiktok just "because everyone else is."

Of course, the world typically doesn't take kindly to those who are willing to state that they don't care about this ostensible "everyone else."

So be it. But I'm not about to start posting something I don't care about...

Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your weekend!
