Ode to a Messy Life
Life is messy!
It doesn't matter how I turn it, and no matter what angle I look at it from, my life always seems to have been messy.
I am not saying this from the perspective of being a hoarder, by any means, although I do come from a long line of dedicated collectors of various things.
I am also not saying this from the perspective of being somebody who can't keep things tidy. In fact, I am quite organized, by most standards. Whereas you might find some clutter at my place, It is by no means a disorganized chaos!
I think what I am really trying to say here is that no matter what I do things always seem to be more complicated and involved than I had planned for. I have often aspired to live a fairly simple and minimalistic lifestyle but the world has somehow conspired to make that a virtual impossibility.
When I think about things being messy, it is something that extends far beyond the physical plane. We end up having messy thoughts, and events tend to be messy; plans end up being messy.
While I am generally not inclined to blame others for my predicaments in life, I will say that I have had plenty of experiences in which perfectly simple and easy to execute plans "had to" be made very complicated by the presence of other people and their ideas.
After all, why do something simple and quick way if it could be done in a way that takes more time, uses more resources and involves more people?
Of course, here we could get into the pool issue of why I have chosen to surround myself with people who like to "complexify" situations. I'm afraid I have no easy answer to that one!
I find myself having more of these thoughts recently because we are in the process of tidying up ahead of downsizing and moving to a smaller house. It is almost alarming how much stuff there is here, how much stuff I'm throwing away, how much of this stuff actually came from other people and I was asked to put it to better use.
But why me?
Like come across as somebody who likes to have a lot of stuff? Evidently I must, or people wouldn't entrust me with their things.
The irony about all this, is that I have never cared as much about "stuff" as any of the people around me. And I mean family members, friends, lovers, spouses, parents and everyone in between.
As I write these words, we are actually storing four different people's stuff in our garage! I find myself wondering why...
The sad thing about stuff, including the stuff that families tend to think of as "Priceless Treasures" is that nobody else really cares about your stuff and even fewer people are willing to buy your stuff.
My parents were always very proud of their very fine antique furniture. We have had some of those pieces here in the house for a while, but we won't have room for him where we're going next. Even though there are allegedly valuable, they are also turning out to be almost impossible to sell. It just seems that nobody cares, because the ultimate truth is that these old pieces — "fine" as they may be — are not relative to most lifestyles in 2025.
In this day and age, most people aren't looking for "Fine" things, they are looking for practical and sturdy things.
Honestly, I am looking forward to a less messy life!
At the moment, it feels like getting to that point is a daunting proposition, but I'm going to forge ahead and I believe I will eventually get there!
Thanks for stopping by, and have a great remainder of your weekend!
