In the End, the Little Things are the Big Things...
What do we think of as Being Important? What do YOU think of as important?
On what scale do you even contemplate the question? Are you thinking in terms of world peace and finding a cure for cancer? Are you thinking about personal fortune and fame? Or are you thinking about your child's smile or your cat purring in your lap? Or maybe a really good cup of coffee, every morning? Where does the meaning and value come from?
When we're young, we tend to think BIG.
We want to accomplish big things, and we view what matters through a very broad lens of perception. Accomplishment is often front and center... and — in many cases — so is the endless "acquisition of of assets."
These are the BIG THINGS that really matter!
"I want to be a leader in my community!"
"I want to have a mansion in the swank part of town!"
"I'll buy a new car every year!"
But are they, really? The things that matter?
Maybe it's a bit of an overused trope, but most people on their deathbeds wish they had spent more time with loved ones, or asked out the person they had a crush on... but not often do they wish they had made another million or had a bigger house.
Recently, I have increasingly been noticing — and celebrating — the ostensibly "little" things in my world.
As I write these words — sitting by the window in my home office — I find myself filled with gratitude for the exceptional beauty of this planet, especially the northern sunsets we're graced with around these parts... it gets dark slowly in the summer, so they last much longer than those in more southern locations.
One of the "little" things I really enjoyed this summer was a particularly good strawberry season — we grow our own — which reminded me of the berries we used to grow when I was a kid... a positive memory from an otherwise less-than-perfect life.
I value that there are three cats sleeping peacfully within arm's length. Cats tend to be independent creatures, and our have blankets and beds all around the house, but they choose to hang out right around me.
In the greater scheme of things... those are small things, but in my personal world, they are actually a Pretty Big Deal!
Thanks for coming to visit, and have a great Sunday!

What they took from me that day. Respect, discipline and making a difference. They took away the good and handed it to the bad. I can't move past it. To them it's miniscule to all the bad in the world what they erased.
