I Don't Expect That to Matter to Anyone Else!

Lately, I have been thinking about the ongoing challenge of publicizing Hive outside our "borders," and specifically about what matters to people in general VS. what matters to those of us who are already here and don't need to be "sold" on the idea.

As far as I am concerned, it makes no sense to pitch features that don't matter to your average social media user who's more interested in exchanging recipes and getting gardening tips.

Of course, we might be proud of these things, but do they really matter? At least in the beginning?

Hive is Decentralized!

Whereas decentralization is something that is of great importance to us here on Hive, I can't honestly expect it to mean anything to most of the people that I have been in contact with on previous social media.

I don't have any stats on the number of people who even know what decentralization means... but I expect that they are fewer than we think.

Rewards in Cryptocurrency!

Without a doubt, rewards are a nice thing if you're a content creator. However, for most people on the street rewards being paid in cryptocurrency will probably be considered more of a complication than a benefit.

I can already hear it now: "why don't they just pay in dollars rather than crypto? This is too complicated!"

Another segment will probably appreciate the novelty value, but soon enough that will wear off.

You Can't Be De-Platformed or Demonetized

This one will be a mixed bag. For some people that'll definitely have some appeal, quite a few of the people I plan to expose to this platform have at the very least had warning letters and "times out" on Facebook, mostly because they had opinions about issues of psychology, health and spirituality that didn't pass Facebook's filters. A few also promote medical practices that don't pass the mainstream narrative.

In this case, I would say this is going to matter to maybe 25 to 30% of the people I'll be putting this in front of.

Most people in the world don't even think in terms that would cause mainstream social media to get their warning flags out. And mostly, they just keep quiet.

You Have Full Ownership of Your Content

This is another thing we consider very important around here, but in the general sense it only is going to have some relevance.

Many people will think that it's great, but at the same time they will want to know that even if they have full ownership of their content is guaranteed that their content is going to be available, as in many of us have had a lot of experience with websites simply shutting down.

As such, it'll have to come with an explanation of how a decentralized blockchain run by Witnesses works in the long run.

What some will undoubtedly point out to me, is that just because you have ownership of your content doesn't mean that somebody won't steal it and pass it off as their own. For most writers ownership is a multifaceted concept.

I expect the most common commentary will run along the lines of "What use is ownership if the venue is shut down or becomes inaccessible?"

Anyway, these are mostly just things I'm reminding myself to be ready for...

Thanks for stopping by and have a great remainder of your week!

True, a lot of the selling points for HIVE aren't for everyone. I would hope our community withstanding the Justin Sun coup should support the concept that it'll last. We've been around a lot longer than a lot of other projects.

You Can't Be De-Platformed or Demonetized

Well, I suppose the "Demonetized" bit must be some sort of euphemism. Because I could swear that I know of some Hivers that in some way or another they have been demonetized.
