"Having It All" Comes With a Hefty Pricetag!
I'm not 100% sure when it first came about, but there was this point at which society started imprinting us with the idea that we could "have it all."
I'm not convinced this "it" was ever defined in a meaningful way, but the subtext message was that we needn't ever give up on any of our ideas or dreams — however whimsical or unlikely they might be — because we can have it all.
Like any good marketing message, this was purveyed without much attention being paid to the price tag it came with.
In fact, that part of glossed over completely... perhaps because the "darker" side of "having it all" was that we were expected to enslave ourselves into a workaholic existence to support a chain of endless consumption.
No, this is not intended as a ranty diatribe in condemnation of capitalism... it's more a cautionary tale relating to the ways we're prone to falling asleep when presented with enough promises and shiny objects.
There's a difference between authentically following your desires from a place of well-informed consciousness... and blindly following those desires, oblivious to the toll it takes not only on yourself, but also on the world around you.
What really matters to you?
Are the ambitious goals you relentlessly pursue centered around your own innermost desires... or are they merely an expression of following some "shiny" doctrine that was handed to you that "sounded good" at the time?
In order to HAVE it all, you'll end up having to GIVE it all...
WHY do you want it all?
If you DO get it all, what will you rally have?
The thing about "chasing" things is that the chase doesn't ever end... even after you've attained the object/person of your desire.
As the old truism goes, "it's the JOURNEY, not the DESTINATION, that matters."
I was about 34 years of age when I found myself first pondering the question of why the heck I was pursuing the path and life I was pursuing.
Two years later, I was downsized, divorced and content with a much smaller existence.
I went from a life centered around what more I could put on my "table" to what I could take off that table to make it simpler and less cluttered.
Seems like we often end up selling ourselves into society's indentured servitude in service of pursuing goals that are not even our own!
Do you really want it all?
Are you willing to sell your soul in order to create that reality? Think carefully, before you answer that question... or completely dismiss the entire proposition, perhaps for fear of discovering (admitting?) that you have been duped into chasing ghosts and imaginary realities...
But then again, the pursuit of "having it all" might just be exactly what YOU want...

All I want is a roof over my head with no mortgage or rent, a car that runs, some land to garden, an internet connection with a good computer, and a little cash to spend on hobbies.
I don't need a mansion, a luxury SUV, a pool, home automation, or luxury vacations. I definitely don't want to live paycheck to paycheck.paying credit card bills.
I have a decent car and no debt. Progress?
From where I am sitting, those seem like reasonable and proportional ambitions... based in actual tangible reality.
It's pretty close to what we're striving for, as well. We have the house, the vehicle (both paid for), land to grow food, pretty reliable internet... we mostly need to work on the "available cash" end of the equation. Our debt is mostly on a Home Depot card because they run 12-18-24 month financing at zero APR on various promos.
The cash squeeze comes mostly from living in an area where the house we paid $275K for in 2011 now has a tax and market value topping $1M... so property taxes, insurance, etc. is based on that larger number.
Still, it beats being in debt... I'd rather be strapped a bit but debt free.
I saw an article recently saying the cost of necessities is rising far more than the cost of luxuries. For example, my local game store still sells packs of Magic: The Gathering cards at the same pre-COVID prices. War games have risen, but roughly in line with CPI inflation numbers. But rent and food have absolutely skyrocketed.

There's a lot of "Hidden" inflation, too.
Take our homeowner's insurance. 12 years ago, it was $57-ish a month. On the latest renewal, it was $188/month. The actual premium per $1,000 hasn't risen much, but with property values up 3.5x — and premiums based on value — the rise is nuts, compared to CPI. Similarly with our property taxes which were +/- $1,800/yr when we bought in 2011, but now is closing on $8,000/year.
Basic food items are very patchy. Eggs have gone nuts, while a quart of plain yogurt is about the same as five years ago. A pound of boneless skinless chicken breast has gone from $1.99 to $5.99 lb. Pork chops are only up about 15% or so.
It all invites a lot more attention and mindfulness in how we shop and spend money...
