“You know,” eleven-year-old Velma Trent said to her friends, “I don't know why people do all this other stuff while God gave us cooking – now that's some magic.”

“Isn't it, though?” Eleanor and Andrew said.

“Your grandmother's biscuits start a lot like our grandmother's meat loaf and veggie loaf for Amanda: an unpleasant lump,” Andrew said, “but now all of it smells and is about to taste so good.”

“And I'm getting some of all of it!” five-year-old Lil' Robert Ludlow said as he came running into Velma's arms. “I have two hollow legs, and, see, I get to have a veggie leg so I can love Amanda, and a meatarian leg so I can love on all the other food!”

“How are you going to have ulterior motives and schemes at just five years old, Rob?” Velma said ,and smiled as her friends cracked up.

“Ulta-what?” Lil' Robert said. “Does it taste good?”

“I guess it does since you are getting to support Amanda and get all the types of food,” Velma said.

“Well, if you show love to everybody, you get to try all their food,” Lil' Robert said, “and they get to try yours, and then it just gets better and better!”

“He does have a point,” Eleanor said as her baby brother ran over to get a hug there and then from his big brother.

“Just getting all this food magic – I'm so glad that our grandparents don't discriminate against boys because we all need to be part of this,” Andrew said as his little brother happily snuggled with him.

“I can cook, too!” Lil' Robert said. “I love when people say that 'you put your foot in it,' see, because the next time we make meatloaf I'm doing it, see, because my feet are bigger than my hands and I can make more!”

“Yes, but are your feet the right size for the loaf pan though?” Andrew said. “You gotta think about why people use their hands for most things.”

Lil' Robert considered this.

“You mean loaf pans are not foot-compliant?” he said, and Velma laughed.

“I see you've been in Grayson's vocabulary books again!” she said.

“Yes, because, see, I need to learn a bunch of stuff,” he said, “and that's why I gotta eat because, see, brain food.”

My Dad made biscuits this way, or should I say he made us knead them. Sometimes it pays to not be the best, he liked the way one of my sisters made them so you wanted to make sure you did not show up in the kitchen until after she did.
