In this post I will be sharing with you my early morning visit to the market to buy some dry corn and cassava flour that I will mix together to create an alternative for Semovita or Semolina (these are popular brands of swallow that are sold in mosts markets and malls).

Even though a large amount of household opt for these products, for a while now I have been making mine at home by myself to avoid consuming excessive preservatives and additives. Well, apart from the health factor, dry corn and cassava flour are quite pocket-friendly compared to purchasing these branded products.

Today is Market day at the ever-busy weekly Forest Market and it is a go-to market if you want to buy your food items at a considerably reasonable price. It is not that it is exactly cheap but it is more affordable compared to the other daily markets or supermarkets. For fresh foods such as pepper, tomatoes, plantain, vegetables (spinach, oziza leaves, pumpkin leaves etc), carrots and the likes you would get a better deal because most of the sellers come straight from the farm and they wouldn't want their goods to get spoilt since it is not a daily market.

So, knowing fully well that I have a busy day ahead, I planned to get to the market early and return to the shop as fast as I can. By 7.20am, my husband and I dropped off our son off at school and we made our way to the Forest Market so that I could quickly do my shopping. Owning to the fact that I was familiar with each segment of the market I quickly headed straight to the section where grains like corn, millet, beans and rice were sold.

As I was walking I was using my eyes to scan the goods that were displayed looking for clean and quality grains. After some minutes I spotted a woman with very neat bowl of dried corn and I asked for the price which she told me was ₦700 per mudu. I tried to bargain for ₦650 but she didn't agree. My bargaining skills failed me. Haha. In the end, I bought 5 mudus at ₦700 each.

Then I moved to the section where they sell already ground cassava (that is, it is now cassava flour). Using the same strategy of using my eyes to scan while I walk, I spotted a woman with a bowl of clean cassava flour and when I quizzed her she assured me that it was prepared under the best hygienic conditions. So, I bougt 3 mudus at ₦500 per mudu. Now, my plan was to quickly grind the dry corn so I could go home and mix the cassava flour with it and start tge day's work at the shop.

Unfortunately, the grinding machine had other plans. It was faulty and it was taking forever to get it fixed. I was thinking it was a minor issue that could be fixed without 10 minutes to 20 minutes, so I waited for some time. But it didn't still work so I had to leave and head back home. I will find another time to return and hopefully the machine would have been fixed.

Thanks for reading and see you in my next one.

Do not mind the grinding machine, some other time you will grind it, take home your dry corn, very nice pictures from the market.

The only option I had was to go home with the corn and go back some other time. If not I would waste a lot of time.

Thank you for your comments.
