I CREATED A BEAUTIFUL GOWN WITH ANKARA & ASOOKE FABRICS WITH A PUFF-SLEEVE AND A V-NECK DETAIL

Hey lovelies โค๏ธ

Welcome to my blog ๐Ÿค—

In this post I will be sharing with you how I made a gown for my customer with ankara fabrics and asooke fabrics. The dress is a uniform that was picked in her church for Children's Day Celebration and she is one of the children co-ordinators. She brought the fabrics without no particular style in mind but she just trusted me to create some magic with the fabrics.

Considering the kind of outfits I have been making for her in the past I have an idea of her style, hence I opted for this amazing design.

Let me walk you through the process.

Materials Needed

  • 4 yards Ankara fabrics
  • Asooke fabrics
  • Lining
  • Threads matching the outfit
  • Scissors
  • Tailoring chalk

Step by Step

  • The first step is to mark the fabrics and cut out the pattern before the sewing begins. In doing this we will mark out the fabric using the measurements of the customer.

  • These are the following measurements that I will be using: shoulder 16", bust 44", underbust 36", bust length 16", half length 20", waist 42", hip 45", gown length 59", sleeve length 19", round sleeve 16".

  • So, I don't want the gown to be too free, so I beared in mind not to add too much seam allowance when I was cutting. I added 2" seam allowance to get a somewhat fitted dress.
    1000199867.jpg

  • I start by cutting out the front piece which I later used to cut the back piece. Then, I also cut out the front and back pieces of the lining. I added 2" seam to give room for sewing.

  • Next, I cut out the asooke fabrics that will be used to create a v-shape design on the neckline and also to tape the two sleeves.
    1000199869.jpg

  • Remember I made mention of the use of asooke in modern day fashion to add spice to outfits. It is serving the same purpose in this outfit too.
    1000199870.jpg

  • Fold the ankara fabric, then measure and mark the sleeve length (19") plus 1" seam allowance.

  • Then measure and mark the round sleeve (16") divided by 2 which is 8" plus 2" seam allowance.
    1000199871.jpg

  • Cut out the sleeve and repeat the process for the second sleeve.

  • Then to form the puff effect create gathers at the head of the sleeve before attaching to the armhole.
    1000199872.jpg

  • Then cut asooke fabric that is about 3" wide and long enough to go around the sleeve, join it to the ankara sleeve.
    1000199873.jpg

  • Next, I will join the front piece of the ankara fabric to the front lining piece and repeat the process for the back piece of the ankara fabric and the back lining piece.

  • Afterwards, attach the front and back pieces together.
    1000199874.jpg

  • Then I will work on the neckline by using the asooke fabrics to create a v-shape on the neckline. Then I used my pressing iron to give it a good press. The result was amazing.

  • Then, I hem the bottom of the gown by folding and sewing them down. Next, I use an iron to press the hems so that they will be as flat as possible.

  • The gown is ready for delivery.

  • However, you can test it on your body if you are of the same body size with the customer or use your mannequin to check if there are any adjustments needed.

Thanks for reading and see you in my next one.
