When We Was Magic Gump

Greetings and salutations Hivers. Today let’s go into another Three Tune Tuesday post.

As always, thanks to @ablaze for making this series. Lots of people participate in it! Follow the tags to find a ton of good music recommendation.

Today’s selections are random, as ever. No clear theme today… or is there?! We have some nostalgia filtered through late-’80s weirdness, a hilarious Gen X parody, and an 80s cover by my new favorite band, the Middle Aged Dad Jam Band, which I featured last week.

Let’s dive in.

George Harrison – When We Was Fab

This is the closest thing you’ll ever get to a George Harrison Beatles reunion song. Produced with Jeff Lynne, the track bathes in psychedelic callbacks — melodically and visually. Watch the video and you’ll spot Ringo, a Sgt. Pepper costume, sitars, backward loops, and even a nod to the Abbey Road cover.

It’s cheeky, self-aware, and somehow more Beatles than a lot of Paul’s solo output ever dared to be. George sings with both affection and distance; he knows those days are gone, but also knows how to conjure the ghost of them.

Every time I hear this, I feel like I’m walking through a wax museum that somehow has a pulse.

“Weird Al” Yankovic – Gump

What better way to follow up a Beatles send-up than with a post-grunge parody of a ’90s cultural phenomenon? “Gump” takes the Presidents of the United States of America’s song “Lump” and rewires it with scenes from Forrest Gump.

It’s one of those parodies that’s funny on first listen but even funnier the more familiar you are with the original. Al has a gift for cadence. The man doesn’t just rewrite lyrics, he mirrors the syllabic rhythm so precisely it feels like an alternate universe version of the same song.

The outro still makes me laugh out loud. And at just 2 minutes, it’s a perfect palate cleanser between deeper cuts.

Bonus: this is one of the few songs that makes me nostalgic for a movie I never actually liked. (Not really, but kind of, and don’t ask me why I don’t like it — that’s a rant right there. Hint: I can do without more Boomer self-praise.)

Middle Aged Dad Jam Band – Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic

I have no featured two songs by these guys so they have been showing up on my suggestions a lot. I love these guys. They play with real heart and have a lot of talent. They play this Police cover with real polish and personality.

My new favorite band!

So what’s your favorite?

Good selections. I think from all these selections, I really enjoyed listening to "Every little thing she does is magic".

I can see why you like the last band. They are pretty cool. Seems like they have gathered quite the following online too. It's crazy how accessible talent like this is these days.
