I Want My MTV
Once upon a time, there was a music channel. It killed the radio star with its power and brought light to a decade that was already dangerously oversaturated (at least in rooms not still wrapped in ’70s wood paneling). We sensed, even then, that it couldn’t last—and that knowledge made it sweeter. This was the age of MTV, brief and blazing, like a god who burns brightest just before disappearing.
It descended like a god with a logo for a face — part flag, part graffiti, part corporate sigil. At first it did exactly one thing, and it did it endlessly: it played music. Not songs in the old sense, but visions. Short myths. Three-minute origin stories where sound finally had a body. You didn’t just hear a band anymore; you saw them, and the seeing mattered.

In those early years, MTV felt less like a channel and more like a portal. The VJs spoke in an oracular half-tone, casual and ironic, as if they were only half-aware of the power they were channeling. Videos repeated until they etched themselves into your brain. You could walk into school the next morning and know without discussion that everyone had seen the same thing you had. A shared dream, broadcast nationwide.
The music itself bent to the medium. Songs became sharper, stranger, more visual. Bands that might once have remained cult curiosities suddenly loomed larger than life. Fashion, attitude, even posture shifted. MTV didn’t just reflect the culture; it accelerated it, like a feedback loop with better hair.
And yet, even at the height of its power, there was always the sense of a bargain being struck. To gain vision, music surrendered something intangible. Radio had allowed songs to remain private, portable, imagined. MTV made them fixed. Canonical. Once you’d seen the video, it was hard to unsee it. The song became inseparable from its images, for better or worse. The era of the ugly rock star was over (for better or worse); charisma was no longer enough. In this new pantheon, you needed a face like a sex god—like Billy Idol—or you simply didn’t ascend.

The myth begins to fray in the ’90s. Programming creeps in. Narratives get longer. Music becomes one offering among many, then slowly just another relic in the temple. The channel doesn’t die so much as it molted, shedding its original purpose in favor of something more durable, more profitable, and far less magical.
Perhaps this was inevitable. Even the old myths warned us: flight is intoxicating, and altitude deceiving. What begins as transcendence often slips into spectacle. MTV had risen so high, so fast, that it mistook height for permanence. The wings didn’t fail all at once—they softened gradually, unnoticed, as music became one offering among many. By the time gravity reasserted itself, the fall felt less like a crash than a quiet forgetting.
Today, MTV still exists, but like many old gods, it survives mostly as a name. The music is gone. The rituals have moved elsewhere. Music is everywhere now, yet nowhere in particular. Abundant, fragmented, algorithmically summoned. We gained convenience and lost communion.
Still, for those of us who were there, the memory remains vivid. A flickering screen. A distorted guitar. A logo crashing onto the surface of the moon. For a brief moment in time, music ruled the airwaves not just with sound, but with image and myth.
When people say I want my MTV, they aren’t really asking for a channel to return. They’re remembering the moment before the fall, when the air still felt thin and full of possibility. Before the wings hardened into something safe and ordinary. Before it flew too close to the sun. Like all good myths, it isn’t the flight we miss, exactly — it’s the brief belief that flight might last forever.

I think the first video I saw on MTV was Culture Clubs Karma Chameleon. Think I was in 5th or 6th grade, lived in the country and staying at my cousins who lived in town and had cable. When we moved into town and finally was able to afford cable, I watched MTV regualrly, especially Headbangers Ball.
Great video and song. That was a good introduction to the channel!

So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone
I've been labelled a lot of things on Hive 😂 by the biggest farmers scammers and downvoters
Actions speak louder than any words do especially when them words are coming from a compolsive liars

Unfortunately, I didn't live through that golden age of MTV; I was born in the 90s when the channel began to become something more. I watched many television programs, but I will never forget the music videos of the songs that moved my world when I was little. My taste in Rock and Pop music was practically born from MTV, with music videos by Michael Jackson, Bruno Mars, Robbie Williams and among others.
I also saw how over the years MTV transformed from a channel purely dedicated to music to a channel more focused on television programs, series, and reality shows. Personally, I think it was horrible to see this decline in a channel as beloved as MTV, to be honest. And well, now with digitization and the internet Many people may have forgotten about that channel, but I'll never forget it. I may not have known it in its early days or its heyday, but it certainly marked a large part of my childhood and pre-adolescence.

Yes... Imagine now how the new generation will grow up without knowing what MTV once was. Instead, they only have the internet, social media, and AI... Woe to humanity and the future that awaits us. 🥴

Let's write a book! I have the outline and idea. But I am too lazy to write at the moment and it seems like an overwhelming project for one person...
Emphasis on reality of Capitalism unfortunately. The death of MTV was just Capitalism doing what Capitalism does. Unfortunately.
I can pump out articles of 500-1000 words no problem, but a much-longer book would be quite the challenge...
Much longer books take years.

This is an excellent reflection on that era! We had 'Rage' - not quite MTV with the VJ's and commentary, which made it somewhat better, imo. It was looser, more democratic I guess. We were kinda left alone with it, particularly coming back from the pub or being awake all night with tv in the background drinking and smoking bongs (yep, Australia in the 90's). Rage let us encounter all kinds of things - entire albums, abrasive, boring or brillant clips, niche music like post punk and noise or indigenous artists - no explanation, no apology. Sometimes a guest programmer - Nick Cave, Bret Easton Ellis, Iggy Pop, Irvine Welsh, I mean, they had a whole range of artists, musicians, film makers - Spike Jonze for eg.
God, what a time.
I can still remember the opening intro clear as.
Now that name — Rage — instantly brings Rage Against the Machine to mind. And that intro kind of plays into that. Love it!
It does doesn't it? Chaotic noise. And Iggy Pop.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone
I've been labelled a lot of things on Hive 😂 by the biggest farmers scammers and downvoters
Actions speak louder than any words do especially when them words are coming from a compolsive liars

Cable tv appeared only in the 90s in Portugal, and Mtv with it. I loved the channel when it appeared; being able to have the video clips associated with the sounds we knew was awesome. Nowadays it seems just a shitshow of reality tv, last times I glimpsed it 😂. Still, it left its mark in my youth!

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone

Sadly they finally started to shut down all of their legacy music channels. Now it's just the basic trash that you can find on any other channel like Bravo or whatever. While I do give some respect to The Real World, I still just wish they had stuck with music. In many ways VH1 was far superior. I mean pop up video right!?
While I didn't foresee that "The Real World" would lead to their downfall, that show is what got me to watch VH1 for the first time. I went to MTV for music and got a shit show (IMO) so I channel flipped to VH1. And yeah — Pop up video! That show rocked. Do they still do that?
I don't think they still do it, but I don't bother going to those channels too much. If VH1 is still even around it's mostly movies now I think.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone

There's nothing like waiting for your favorite artist's concert on MTV, or the MTV Music Awards 😎🔥🔥 I think that's a feeling that's hard to replicate and repeat because it was something that marked a beautiful part of music history, both for the singers and for us music lovers. It wasn't just the music, but MTV was the perfect home for it 👍 The top 5 songs or the top 10 of each day were a must-see for me. Excellent post; it brought up a lot of memories.
I had a different experience of the '80s and '90s. I grew up homeschooled, in a house without TV. Even though I was 14 in 1990, I didn't see MTV or a music video until probably '92. Even then it was a rare occurrence, only when I visited a friend's house.
So, I held onto music as something "private, portable, imagined". I listened to the song of my generation (our generation, I guess), Smells Like Teen Spirit, on my walkman over the radio and, somehow, didn't see the video until lately, within the past five years or so. Crazy, but true.
I did have the experience of other songs that I had imagined being changed by the video. There was a sense of loss to that. I still don't like to watch videos too much; I prefer to listen and fix the song in my head through the sound and lyrics first, then maybe watch the video later.
You're right that video changed music though: often contemporary music simply does not make sense, or doesn't feel complete, without the the video. For me, that's a mark against the song. I don't see it as legitimate or up-to-par unless it can stand alone.

OMG, yes! I remember when MTV launched. Not only did they give the date, but the exact time as well! We were sitting there, glued to the TV set with static, waiting for the iconic moment to arrive, and it was EPIC! 😁 They challenged the paradigms, as you so aptly noted, of the music industry, the advertising industry, and the cable-TV industry, and they succeeded on all fronts! What they offered was so innovative, it was a shame they changed the format of their programming so much and let things slide downhill. THANKS for the reminder, and for your 'take' on it all! 💖
Ah, the good old days back when MTV was MTV. The 80's wouldn't have been the same without it. I still remember seeing Dire Straits "Money For Nothing" for the first time on there, that was awesome! I wanted my MTV then too!
