Hive Needs More Traffic
In this post I asked people to guess on the price of BTC at 9:30 am New York Time on Black Friday with a price of 5 HSBI to the person the closest. And.... I had no takers. None of you like HSBI — or just no one actually read the post?
Lately my posts are getting about 50 views, with around 30 or those being unique. (You can see you posts stats on the Peakd Insights page). But that particular post got exactly 1 view. Only 1. I did get a few comments, so I will give people the benefit of doubt and assume they were using a browser (probably Brave) that blocks all trackers, so peakd wasn't able to register their view. I know I do this — taking care to block pretty much everything every site requests. So I understand others wanting to do the same.
Whatever the case may be, that's not unusual. Most Hive posts get very little actual traffic. You might be fooled by the high payout on some posts, but the majority of those votes on most people are autovotes. Again, Hive's audience does lean towards the more cautious libertarian attitude, so I'm sure that skews the stats down, but even so... they need to be much higher. How many hits does Medium get do you imagine? Do you think Hive gets even a fraction of that?
Which highlights one of the major problems we've always had. For whatever reason, few people who aren't already members here ever stumble onto these pages, and the people who are already members here are all more interested in writing their own content than in reading the content of others. The fact that most Hive users would rather be writing than reading
I don't know the solution here. We need to get Hive posts ranked higher on Google so we can actually attract people here. And we need to onboard people so we actually grow this place.
Oh well. Anyway, since I'm in a good mood, despite no one actually making the requested guess, I'm going to go ahead and send an HSBI to everyone who gave a comment. Here you go!

I confess that lately I haven't had the discipline to read and comment on the publications I vote for. I vote conscientiously on each one, but then I don't give my time to contribute something to the discussion and to enrich the publication, as you say. Not for the rewards payment, because my vote is of low value.

I agree with what you mentioned about the low traffic that Hive and its Fronts currently have. Personally, I think this is due not only to the low user traffic on Hive, but also to the same Fronts such as PeakD, Ecency, InLeo and others that do not have any type of algorithm or function that helps the user to be able to see in their Feed the content that is of interest to them. We literally depend on what the users we follow post and what they sometimes reblog. Some even abuse reblogs and fill their blogs with posts from other accounts just to get followers or attention.
Personally, I admit that I have even muted accounts that abuse this tool because they filled my feed with posts that I am not interested in seeing. Currently, I follow and view posts with content that interests me or catches my attention (as is the case with this particular post that caught my attention because of the title, yes). Aside from that, we have comments and votes to get an idea of how much traffic our posts get. Well, votes also depend a lot on Trails and all that. I believe that only about 1% of our followers actually see our content, and that can be confirmed by the comments and interactions we receive.
I also wonder why they don't just index all the content/posts uploaded daily to Hive by Google to get more traffic. But I also remember that most posts don't meet some minimum requirements for better SEO, since some users barely use tags and others abuse them in one way or another. I'm not an SEO expert by any means, but I at least have a basic understanding of how to write articles, create catchy titles, and use appropriate tags to help the post get increased traffic. But even with all the knowledge and methods I've acquired thanks to my short experience creating written content online, I admit that it's very difficult to get any traffic on Hive.
As you yourself have said, most people come here to make posts and earn money before even reading or interacting. Currently, there are many creators and very few viewers. We need more audience, more viewers, more readers who see and interact with our content.
I apologize for going on at such length, but I wanted to share my opinion on this topic with you.

I heartily disagree with the idea that Hive needs an algorithm to fill up feeds. I think the lack of that algorithm is one of the few reasons that people who aren't creators stick around.
The problem is that Hive already has an algorithm, and it is entirely broken and does far more damage than good.
Hive's algorithm varies by front end, and can be ignored on all of them.

Certainly the algorithm on all these Hive frontends is absolutely terrible. Rather than surfacing anything interesting, it just always shows off the exact same people. Which creates the game where people try to get more and more autovotes not only for the money but also so that they will show up in the trending algorithm. If we want to fix Hive, the algorithm would be a great place to start.
Yeah, it's probably be difficult to get all of Hive indexed by Google. But that said, there still are a lot of good posts on Hive that should be indexed. I'd rather read a personal blog post here any day than one of the annoying SEO list posts from Medium ("Ten reasons why your posts suck and how to fix it" or "How I made 10 Gajillion dollars from my Writing in 2 Weeks") that Google has indexed.
I honestly didn't know about the existence of this algorithm that Hive has, or at least I overlooked it at the beginning of my comment since I didn't remember it well as such. The fact that your feed depends on certain requirements other than your own actual interaction as a user is something that, personally, I don't like very much. As you say, it's always the same ones who end up trending, while many good creators are forgotten along with their content due to a lack of votes and virality. I read there that they were working on a new algorithm, let's hope it's what's so needed here.
I mention indexing and SEO as an example that, no matter how much effort one puts into making a good post, in the end it only gets a few dozen views and that's it. There is a lack of tools or ways to bring more traffic organically to Hive.

The reality is that Hive would most likely not get more traffic even if it could get ranked in Google or other search engines. Very few are targeted to any specific audience or written for SEO. THere is even fewer articles that would be interesting to most outside of Hive.
In fact as you pointed out, most people on Hive don't even read what is posted, they just vote and move on. Those that do comment, are mostly transactional. They will only comment, if you comment on their post etc. Some don't even do that. The last couple points is why I have mostly stopped posting and wasting my time on Hive. There are a handful of people I enjoy interacting with, you included, but other than that, muh, just another crypto money making scheme to me.
Maybe that gets into the broader problem of SEO making the web unreadable. All these BS posts that Google loves like "How I Became Successful on X After Only A Week" or "Top Ten Movies With Clowns". I mean, honestly, I'd prefer to read a badly written personal post on Hive than any of that SEO crap.
It's a shame this has pushed you away. I always enjoy reading your posts. But you aren't the only one it's pushed away. Hive continues to shrink and shrink, and that's not entirely due to the falling price.
Google's alogirthm has become a little better than what you describe above. The last I played with it, your subject matter had to match what you optimized for. Example, if you were optimizing for fluffy pink elephants, your article better be about fluffy pink elephants. Now that may not be interesting to you and me, but it will rank well most likely for fluffy pink elephants and people looking for information about fluffy pink elephants. My understanding is that Google has gotten a lot better at filtering out fluff pieces just meant to bait people and are pushing toward good content now. BUt I haven't messed with it in sometime, so maybe its not so anymore.
Yeah, I may not be around that much as I have other things going on these days and Hive just isn't on my list of priorities. I will stick my head in occasionally and say hey to you and others though.

Our entire oroblems come from bot pages, because their creation has been given the green light here for years, and each user can have hundreds of pages without them being real users. These pages are simply used for printing, which is why the Hive world has big problems + a big inflation . The only thing that will fix a lot of things is if these robotized pages are put to an end. New users are not stupid, they soon discover fast that they are posting and competing with bots who simply print their value out of the page. 🤷♂️🤷♂️🤷♂️
Yes, that is a huge problem. People like Marky and others have been trying to downvote the bot accounts for years, but they just keep coming. That is definitely another of the many problems that we as a community need to figure out how to tackle.

Guilty a.f. I do love reading when I have time, but it's usually my urge to express myself that keeps me here. Still, the global community here had inspired me, and I've made more connections here than real life, so there's that.

It's always been a funny one on Hive. We know we have a duty to comment to keep things alive, but when we get crickets, we can't be bothered reciprocating... Crickets?
This is a bit like the pot calling the kettle black, eh? 😅 It's true that my own commenting has fallen off the cliff the past few months. I admire people like @bozz all the more people he manages to give dozens of comments daily and here these past few months I can barely even manage to reply to comments on my own posts. I swear, I don't know how he manages it.
But my point here wasn't to call out anyone. We all get busy at times and can't be bothered. That's life. I was more aiming to the larger issue that the lack of comments and views suggests, an issue that might be one of the factors that's behind this apparent downwards spiral Hive has been in for the past year.

I agree we need much more traffic. I do follow you, but then I don't get around to looking at every post on my feed. My votes are mostly manual as I can use them up anyway. I don't know much about SEO, but I have heard people say that there may be issues as the same content will be duplicated across the various front ends. That said, I did find an interesting post that came up in a search that was on Waivio. It would be interesting to see which sites get picked up most often.
I was using Brave, but have recently switched to Firefox, with an ad blocker, so I don't know if my views will show up. I assume those are for a specific site, e.g. peakd.
That's a great point about the duplicated content. I wonder if that issue could be solved by one of the sites (perhaps hive.blog) setting the post as the "canonical version". Then Google could know to point to that version and ignore all the others. I suppose the other frontends might not be happy with losing traffic, but that could benefit all of Hive.

There used to be hive stats posted by one of the witnesses back in the days. I believe that has turned into a monthly post. I did had a look at it a few weeks ago and the stats weren’t promising.
It is a small community here, full of upvote circles, strange curation accounts and so on.
A newcomer will notice these things rather quickly. And will move on.
So yes we do need more people here but we also should try to keep the new ones.

Yes, we need to both keep the ones we have and get new ones. A very tall order. I really hope the new light accounts that are coming might help a little with getting new people. But as for retaining the ones we do have — I have no ideas.

We are trying to drive more traffic to hive via redditposh, but honestly it's not easy, people are interested in news, science discovery, history, politics, society ... What is usually posted on hive? Crypto analytics, the usual hive related games posts, food or travel, personal reflections, that's it... so the average person won't arrive here
Add Haiku, Japan, history, or any of the kids of posts I write. Reddit almost never follows when mine are shared there. But I don't think we are ever going to get many people from Reddit. Getting traffic to Hive is easy, I bring several dozen new eyeballs with every comedy video I post. The problem is getting those new eyeballs to sign up, and that's always going to be a problem with a key based system. Most people simply do not have the attention span to deal with our sign up and log in process.
Preach, brother! I've been complaining endlessly about the complexity of the key system and how Hive fails the grandma test for years, since way back in the Steemit days. 99% of potential new users turn away and leave as soon as they come up against that key system. Thank god Blocktrades and those on top are finally addressing this issue and working on light accounts. I have high hopes for light accounts. I just worry that it may be too little too late.
It's never too late, as long as there are people here creating, and we have no shortage of that.

I agree, it needs a lot more traffic. We have seen so many accounts vanish over last year that it's nearly pathetic. Very few people view my posts now, and my engagement in down compared to even six months ago. I know the price of Hive doesn't help, but it's the only factor. There are many roadblocks that slow down anyone new from signing up, unless they have someone guiding them.
Even then once they are in they may post but get no support and from utter frustration leave when their post go completely ignored. It's hard to noticed here on Hive and break into a community. That brings up another issue, many communities themselves are suffering from lack of engagement.
We need to get more people interested in onboarding which is difficult. Once they do retention rates are abysmal, and those who enjoy writing may continue because they enjoy it despite lack of real rewards. Those with the biggest rewards received get them all from autovotes and rarely have any engagement, and they carry away most of the benefits.
At this point I'm not sure how to fix things, even SEO won't bring people into Hive. It's a great chain, but it's underutilized... Hopefully we can find ways to increase interest, but it's going to need be something big. Rally cars aren't going to it.

The DHF abuses don't help at all. But the problems definitely go beyond that. Signing up is difficult and the complexity of the key system prevents most people from even trying. Then the few that do pass that gauntlet, they have to face no support and a hostile Hive watchers. It's no surprise we get very few new users who stick around more than a week.
Perhaps when we finally get light accounts, potentially making signing up easy enough to actually pass the grandma test. At that point if we can make a push to get Google to index us more, we might actually get new users. But then we have to figure out how to keep them around.
Maybe it's possible to rethink or add a "shortcut" for the login mechanism. A simpler, guided method and the hard part is handled in the background leaving the simple part to the new user. Each witness could have this simplified system that they could deploy. The server will handle new logins with a procedure that is more practical from the outside. I don't know about it, I'm just a graphic artist, so I could only say stupid things or methods that are not feasible.

This is definitely one of the many weaknesses that Hive has. Many people here are only interested in money, in earnings, they post anything and barely read anything.
I do my best to read everything, or at least most of people's posts. I think it's even a matter of respect to comment on something related to the post, so only comment if you've actually read the post and thus have ideas and content to respond. But often people don't do that; it's just vague answers.
Regarding external traffic to Hive, I've been doing my part. I don't know if you follow me on X, but I've been putting more effort into my posts there, talking about Hive's strengths, our qualities, and I've also been posting on Scribble Network, Farcaster (when I remember), I publish on Publish0X, and all these places have links to my posts here on Hive.
In my opinion, what Hive lacks is a massive focus on microblogs, photos, and videos; it needs to keep up with what's happening in the world. Facebook is dead in Brazil, and what's been booming here all the time are photos and reels from Instagram and TikTok, so we urgently need to catch up with that.
Writing texts, reading texts, content in blog format (long posts) is dying, that's the truth. Consumption today is short, eye-catching texts, photos, and videos; the world is dominated by quick dopamine hits, that is, short-term pleasure.

I believe and have always supported my idea, that it could be wrong. But if we want authentic traffic and have more onboarding, hive needs to become a closed blockchain. Posts must be readable only by subscribers.pages that can be viewed externally may have only the first 3 readable sentences, after that you have to subscribe to continue. I find it useless that from the outside you can read blogs freely. This totally limits onboarding. And if a user does not 'enter' he will not be able to be fascinated by the HIVE blockchain, and it will not create traffic and evolution. Perhaps a paywall could be studied... Advertisers will be able to choose whether their content will be totally free outside or whether readers will have to register to continue reading or to become followers. I believe that the HIVE system lacks a bit of 'elitist' appeal. It should be something to be understood as exclusive to generate more value.
Maybe it's a small and narrow vision of my own, but if access to content is free, there can never be onboarding and curiosity.

If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone
I've been labelled a lot of things on Hive 😂 by the biggest farmers scammers and downvoters
Actions speak louder than any words do especially when them words are coming from a compolsive liars
I will keep updating this post when I get time
