From Soul to Satire: Three Wild Covers (and Weird Al)

Greetings and salutations Hivers. Today let’s go into another Three Tune Tuesday post.

As always, thanks to @ablaze for making this series. Lots of people participate in it! Follow the tags to find a ton of good music recommendation.

Today’s collection is pure randomness. We’ve got a soul-infused take on a classic folk song, a dad-band version of a cult musical number, and one of Weird Al’s most underappreciated gems. No theme this time. Just fun.

Postmodern Jukebox ft. LaVance Colley – House of the Rising Sun

LaVance Colley’s vocals are insane in this one. This cover completely reimagines the Animals’ version, infusing it with a silky late-’60s soul feel—full of horns, backup singers, and drama. The pacing builds slowly and powerfully, and by the final chorus, Colley is absolutely letting loose. A total reinterpretation, not just a novelty.

We’ve all heard the story about how when Bob Dylan heard the Animal’s version of the tune, he was blown away by their reinterpretation of it. Well, this is another mind-blowing reinterpretation.

If Marvin Gaye had covered this song in 1971, it might’ve sounded something like this.

Middle Aged Dad Jam Band – Time Warp (Rocky Horror Cover)

I featured these guys before with their cover of Kodachrome. Well here they are again with a completely different song. There’s something absurdly fun about watching middle-aged dads bring Rocky Horror to life with grins, guitar solos, and a surprising amount of commitment. It captures the weird, gleeful chaos of the original — without trying too hard to imitate it (yet at the same time, while totally imitating the original performances).

More fun than it has any right to be.

Weird Al Yankovic – Headline News

A parody of Crash Test Dummies’ Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm, this is Weird Al in peak early-‘90s form. It riffs on tabloid news stories of the era (Lorena Bobbitt, Tonya Harding, etc.), delivered in that deadpan baritone. What makes it work is how perfectly it nails the earnest dreariness of the original while inserting just enough silliness to make it pop.

You kind of need to have been alive in 1994 to get all the references, but even if you weren’t, it’s still a hilarious time capsule.

So what’s your favorite?

You got me at Weird Al! I loved all three, the first one honestly was new but I love that sound! I can see why Marvin Gaye did a cover. Time Warp was cool too, good old Rocky Horror, before my time but a huge influence on a generation. And Weird al, you gotta love him! Great TTT!

Great stuff! House of the Rising Sun is one of my favorites. It's one of those folk classics that has evolved over time and still stays awesome.
