Cats, Havana Nights, and a Honky Cat Revival
Greetings and salutations Hivers. Today let’s go into another Three Tune Tuesday post.
As always, thanks to @ablaze for making this series. Lots of people participate in it! Follow the tags to find a ton of good music recommendations.
Today I’m grouping together completely different genres, but they sit together surprisingly well.
Stray Cats – “Stray Cat Strut”
What can we say about the Stray Cats. 50s nostalgia was in full swing in the 80s, and these guys were on top of it, channeling that sound but giving it a new twist. There’s something about this song that just oozes cool. Brian Setzer’s guitar tone is so clean you could shave with it, and he pulls off that effortless swagger most bands try for and miss. It’s rockabilly, but not as a museum piece — just a tight, stylish groove that walks in like it owns the alley.
The wild part is how modern it still sounds. Thousands of “retro stylings” float around YouTube, but few people realize how much of that smooth vintage aesthetic comes from Setzer’s phrasing and restraint. No clutter, no bloat, just a lean tune that knows exactly what it wants to be.
Postmodern Jukebox – “Hotel California (Vintage Havana Style Cover)” ft. Rogelio Douglas, Jr.
This one was just dropped by them a few days ago, and man’s it’s a doozie. Postmodern Jukebox’s schtick of taking a modern song and reverse-engineering it into another era is always interesting, and this one is no different. The Havana style they went for isn’t a gimmick; it’s fully orchestrated, rhythmically tight, and Rogelio Douglas Jr.’s voice carries the entire thing like a man who has sung this version his whole life.
What sells it is the atmosphere. The original “Hotel California” is ominous, mysterious… fake, many who hate the song would add… Postmodern Jukebox turns that same tension into something smoky and romantic, like wandering into a 1940s bar where everyone is dancing too slowly and watching each other too closely. It’s the same story, but the emotional gravity shifts.
“Honky Cat” (Elton John cover) - Middle Aged Dad Jam Band
This group is one of my favorite YouTube discoveries of the past few years. Middle Aged Dad Jam Band looks like they formed accidentally at a PTA meeting, but musically they’re sharp. Their “Honky Cat” cover hits the sweet spot between faithful and fresh. They don’t sand down the playful weirdness of the original; they highlight it.
The horns? Crisp. The groove? Laid back without losing energy. And their vocalist walks right up to the Elton vibe without turning it into karaoke — always a delicate line. And the keyboardist? Man, he’s channeling something. There’s a lived-in ease to their sound that makes the whole performance feel like stumbling into the best bar band you’ve ever seen.

So what’s your favorite?

Awesome stuff. I thought I saw that Post Modern was touring somewhere near me the other day, but I might have been mistaken. They would be cool to see live though.
