Anything I Don't Like is Woke
If you follow US news, you may have heard that Cracker Barrel has a new logo. Why is this newsworthy…? Well, we’ll come to that. But first, here:

Old one on left and new one on right
It’s a case of minimalism going to the extreme. This is nothing new; it’s been a trend for awhile, especially in the software world. You may recall that iOS was once designed to look full of real objects (called skeuomorphism), but then about 10 years ago changed to a flat design:

Old version on left and new one on right
As is often the case, Apple set the trend that the rest of the software world soon followed.
Anyway, this minimalist logo design has been growing over the years. It’s manifested itself in the very design of the buildings too. Compare:

There are other reasons for the buildings changing. The common “market research” is telling all these businesses that people like Starbucks-style cafes and that they can gain more business by changing the very design of their buildings to look like Starbucks.
Anyway, what does all this have to do with being woke? Well, as you can see, the new Cracker Barrel logo is just another business falling to this trend. The difference this time is that the MAGA faithful are complaining that the Cracker Barrel change is woke. What does this even mean?
History Lesson
Woke was originally African-American slang, meaning awareness of social injustices, especially race and discrimination. The word lingered in the Black community from the 1920s until it spread into widespread usage with Black Lives Matter in 2014. From there, it was coöpted by the radical Left and broadened to cover gender and LGBTQ issues.
The Right then seized on it, flipping woke into an insult for anything left-leaning. By the end of the decade, it was shorthand for ridicule. MAGA took it further: now anything they dislike — liberal, moderate, or even old-school conservative — gets slapped with the label woke.
Enter Trump and the Logo
Since Trump came to power, they have been purging all moderates and traditional conservatives (and anyone who doesn’t swear fealty to Trump, basically) from the party, using the term woke as a way to put a target on what they want their base to attack.
Anyway. The Cracker Barrel logo. The MAGAs don’t like it, so it’s woke. I don’t really like it either, but… well, I also don’t care. I have much more important things in my life to worry about than a logo.

So yeah, anyway:

"WOKE", First time I'm hearing. But hey! I'm bothered about that logo 😉😉😜. Just kidding!
I really wonder who will be because of a logo 🤔🤔
Oh...MAGA will find a way..
I hate the appropriation of woke to be an insult. I didn't know it originated so long ago. Did you read Jack Whites rant about Trump?
I mean you must feel inadequate to insult people you don't like for spurious reasons. Dickheads indeed.
How edgy! Jack trashed Trump? Nobody’s got the guts to do that 😂 !LOLZ
jokes aside, I wish Jack had the vslls to critics the other politicians he endorsed who did same exact stuff. The virtue signaling is at an all time ridiculous high indeed. So tired of people who ignore the actions when there “guy” does it. Like Green Day, rightfully trashed Bush for being a war criminal, then they cheered Obama who did same exact policies and actions, even dropped more bombs than Bush. Same thing now, these celebs were silent for years as there fav governors and political leaders did authoritarian insane things but they just shouted Orange Man Bad 🤪 and endorsed same crap he’s doing when there “Team” did it. It’s a big game! It’s distractions and fraud and hypercritical clowns 🤡. On all sides!

I didn't know there was a change or controversy, but I also think following a trend when your brand and product have done famously with the original logo and style of restaurant is a lot of wasted money too. I personally don't care for the new, stripped down, blocky version of things. I like differences in personality and style. Who really wants to be like everyone else where you can't tell one from the other? No thank you! Boring!
I didn't know about the original use of the the word woke or that it had a long past. By the time I was aware of it, it did have a negative connotation, one that can't be defined in just one sentence by me, so I do have a negative view of people I consider woke in the way I know of it, but I don't spend my life minutes getting tied up in it.
Yeah, I think the logo redesign was a bad idea. And I think redesigning all these iconic building designs is also a bad idea. But I don't think they much care what I think.
My wife was asking me about this the other day, but I didn't really know what she was talking about. This is the first I have really heard about it!
I probably wouldn't have known what it was about either, but I randomly came across a toot on Mastodon about it.
I have heard the word before but now I understand better what it means and applies to.

I've only heard of the woke stuff here and there but reading this was a great overview of its origins and how it came to be. I also don't care what's "woke" or not, it's just a personal preference, not falling into the herd mentality. Modern minimalistic designs in the software space tend to lack soul for the most part :/
Yeah, I'm with you. I was happy when the flat design first started, but it's gone too far at this point.
