Transforming Public Spaces
How would you modify the public places in your town?
Coming from a town that requires a whole lot of modifications that can come to it, I find this discourse a really interesting one. Many of our towns are places that inhabitants are just living there. In the sense that many don't have much of a choice. A rising factor to that is due to the improvements it needs, as a result of the development it lacks.
Some of the public spaces are in need of some sort of modifications. These could be for different reasons such as, improving and enhancing security, articulating the inhabitants' desire, encouraging development and other reasons as well. These factors can be the bedrock for the modifications of public spaces.
For the modification of a public space, somethings are very much needed; things to put into proper consideration of course. One of such is the benefits to the people (will it impress them; do they need it?). This will be ascertained through a good feasibility study, and good dialogue as well. Funds is one other good consideration. What's the budget and plan? And then, how can such space be maintained? Also, ensuring such modifications comply with relevant laws and regulations.
Understand all these; the things to consider and the reasons that can be for such modifications, I'll like to state how I wish to modify some of the public spaces in my town. These all to improve the functionality, aesthetic appeal, over all user experience of the space.
A renovation and reconstruction will be a good start. A number of these spaces are in good need of restructuring to become useful enough. I once passed by such renovated public spaces in my town and I was overwhelmed. It was a space I wouldn't want to visit for no good reason at all, but seeing it then, I would gladly go into it and spend some time for whatever takes me there. Good landscaping will also add for a good modification, and an aesthetically appealing space.
Some of these spaces are opened and less secure. One good modification will be the employment of a security system. Say, the installation of security cameras would go a long way to improve the security. Environmental sensors will also be employed, to ensure no trespassing or use at odd or not supposed times. Installing some good lighting system will mean for more safety, visibility and security as well.
Accessibility system will be factored into the modification. Things like signage and way finding. I can tell of how much frustrating and time consuming it can be to find one's way around such public spaces, especially big ones. With this, it will ease the engagement of users with the space, thereby promoting its constant use.
One thing discovered of some of the public spaces is its failure to be inclusive enough in design. People living with disabilities are mostly not incorporated or considered in the plan of such spaces. Thus, a modification from my ends will require this consideration in absolute measure. I guess this will heighten the purpose and engagement with such spaces, for its due consideration for all that will need to use it.
