Depression And Anxiety: Societal And Cultural Barriers

(Edited)

The subjects of depression and anxiety have shown themselves to be undeniable and unavoidably present in many lives, and many situations, such that their existence shouldn't be a matter of doubt or question. And neither should they be undermined.

One might not be able to tell, but in many cases, the stories of depression and anxiety are well written on the faces of the victims. We might just be too busy to see at times, but the words are written in the worries, long face, paleness, and many other accompanying signs and suggestions.

It's so sad and overwhelming to see that we live in a world where one pulls the other down or derails them by words or actions, consciously or unconsciously. These continual gestures are suggestions of some of these actions, when words are not used. Society and culture tend to also play their part in advancing such concerns.

Depression and anxiety have "needlessly" been fused with culture and society; setting perspectives and ideologies, thereby eradicating to an extent the health effect of these created stigma on persons.

I know, speaking from where I come, the two subjects of depression and anxiety are not considered really, "a thing". In a world where you're expected to work; not just work, but work hard, and put all the effort you can to improve your level of living while providing daily needs, how can you have time to be anything as depressed or having anxiety. If even a case of sickness can be treated with less consideration for health implications, why should this one be considered better? Well...

I discover this stigma sets in for this fact that one would be seen as weak and less capable. This certainly to a man will not be something he will take, as such he hides all the pains and burdens so long as you can't see it. But a man can only be strong as his state of mind is. The society has then contributed such persons in a place where their trauma can thrive rather than help address it.

Pressures and the desire to seemingly fit in played due diligence in the work on a person's mind to draw he or she to the pretentious idea that they okay instead of speaking out. This because they can be termed as "unstable" and looked at through the lens of such statement, thereby kicking in the sleeping stigma.

I think we all go through some moments of anxiety or depression. Some might have it long enough and heavily lying on them, while others will have it less bearing and through a brief period. In whatever case, I consider that this should be well understood as a matter of health no matter who a person is, whatever the culture or society may think or say, while keeping in high view the health implications.

Thank you for reading through!
