Vintage Photos - Lot 4 (093-096)

Several years ago I bought a flatbed scanner with a slide adapter to scan some old film slides that my grandparents had. After I finished scanning those (there weren't really all that many) I picked up several batches of slides from Goodwill and on eBay out of curiosity. I'm not sure why these commonly wind up at such places but I know that at least some of them have ultimately come from estate sales. Maybe family members just don't know what to do with them. I've seen them advertised as being for arts and crafts but I was more interested in the actual contents. Each slide is literally a snapshot in history. These pictures span from as early as the late 1940s to as late as the early 1990s. There are thousands of these slides. I will be scanning some from time to time and posting them here as an interesting way to look back at the past.

When I say "batch" I mean a group of slides I bought in a single purchase. Usually they are from the same ultimate origin. Typically, a batch will have 100s or even 1000s of slides.

When I say "set" I mean a subset of a batch that I scan together. There are normally four slides in one set because that's how many slides my scanner can scan at once. Likewise, a post will typically have one set of four slides. It's just easier to keep track of that way.

These photos all come from a single slide carousel that came from either Goodwill or eBay...I don't remember which at this point. This is a pretty small batch with only about 130 slides in total. There are dates (month and year) stamped on these that I assume indicates the date when the film was developed. They are all from the 1970s and early 1980s.

These were all scanned with an Epson Perfection V600 Photo scanner.

The first photo is dated November 1980 and features repairs going on inside of the fire damaged house that has been seen in a lot of the recent sets.

The rest of the photos in this set are dated January 1981. The first of them may have actually been taken on Christmas day. I see a present and it looks like kids just waking up. However, I also see someone (presumably the father) holding a pen and one of the kids holding a card. This may have been for (probably) their mother's birthday who I suspect was the woman seen having what looked like a birthday party in a couple of the recent sets. Assuming the clock is right, the one thing I can say for certain is that this photo was taken at 10:03 AM.

To confuse matters a little, it looks like the guy is opening the present in the last two photos. This is apparently the same day as he seems to be wearing the same shirt. You can also see the birthday girl from recent sets whom I am guessing is his wife at this point. It looks like she is wearing the same cloths as in the earlier birthday photos as well (see the second photo in this set for instance).

See the previous post in this series here.

The entire batch that has been scanned and uploaded so far can also be found here. This also includes higher resolution versions and versions with postprocessing.
