Extreme Drought Continues but Clouds Bring Hope

This has been a very dry summer for Central Texas. We are in the worst drought which has occurred in the last 20 years. There was not any measurable rain for most of the summer so people are using more and more water for their crops, livestock and yards.

These clouds appears the other evening and I was hoping that we would get at least a little bit of rain from them. There was a forecast for scattered showers. A few weeks ago we did get a nice rain however the ground is so dry that it just soaked in and did not run at all.

The county I live is in the middle of Texas, USA. It is outlined with a darker black line in the above map. Our area is considered to be in D4 which is the worst of the drought classifications - Exceptional Drought.

The weather forecast shows that a cool front will move in to the area at the beginning of next week bringing with it a very good chance of rain however they also stated that even if we did get rain it would probably not be enough to make a dent in the drought.

Those clouds do look very promising for rain I guess if you were right beneath them. They were beautiful to watch grow in the distance turning darker and darker. I normally hear the thunder if there are rain storms close but with these I did not hear anything.

The sun was setting and dropping behind the clouds I was watching hoping they would move in my direction for a little relief and rain but alas nothing what so ever. Except for the beautiful blues changing as the sun dropped behind the clouds.

Maybe next time a little rain will come our way and bring the needed moisture for the plants. There was a story in the paper that showed that several lakes are getting very low and are less than half of what they should be.

More and more people are moving into the area which will also put more strain on the water supply. The water supply company and local cities have implemented water usage limits which a lot of people are not following. I don't know what will happen if the lakes run dry where they can no longer support the population.
