Solving distraction with distraction

It happens to many of us, how we jump from the frying pan to fire or at least into another frying pan. In the name of creating discipline we generate a new way to stay indiscipline. It can be very funny and after a long run we will be looking for some other wày to get out. This brings about many deficiencies, unhealthy life, deterred finances and emotional breakdown because in the end, one will find out he is just move around a Circle, the is no breaking out.

Take for instance, someone who is having a bad relationship with his spouse. This indeed is always a big distraction. The worry of having to go home to do anything positive when someone with a negative mindset is awaiting to nag at you ALL evening long. So many choose to come home late, at least when they just enter, they will sleep off. Seems a good idea right? So how did you spend those extra hours outside? Ok, you found a good sit to drink down yourself.. Bottle upon bottles to keep the weary soul drenched. How about even introducing a few friends to join you every evening to do that?

There are so many things to consider here, you are overspending, something that is not healthy when you know you have a whole family to take care of. You are out of control, another damaging factor as a caregiver. You become out of touch of your children, everyone sleeps off before you return and you keep a cross finger for the day to break so you sneak out once again. Your entire weekend is outdoors, you are not transferring or transmitting the needed information to your children.

From here, can we say it is best to distract ourselves with another distraction just to ward off a former one? Of course not. I once heard a preaching where a preacher emphasized on how so many pattern their fasting seasons. Since they feel so bored in the process, instead of giving in to prayers and studying the word, they will choose an alternative to while away all the time. They will make a collection of several movie series and spend all day watching, at least before they are done, the day should be over.

They were trying to separate themselves for their maker but they ended up in something entirely very different. The surprising part is that this soon becomes a habit, they spend most of their extra bucks subscribing to TV series, they know all the latest series and it goes on and on. Have you ever considered why your finances is still shaking or getting worse after you have cut so many unnecessaries? I know sometimes the big struggle can be that you are already operating below means.

Nevertheless, one factual consideration is that maybe your new habit is a new replacement to continue damaging your finances. For instance, one may stop eating outside; assuming it is expensive to do so and he wishes to cut those extra bucks. So his solution is to cook and eat that meal for at least two days. Not bad, so how did it end? Stupor! You get me right, what he prepared can't meet the Next day because he is at liberty to eat at will. He has to spend double the amount he should have used to eat outside to eat at home daily.

There are so many examples I can bring to the table. So why am I emphasizing all these? Simple, you need discipline to overcome any state of inconveniences and not just a swap of habits. Swapping of course is exchanging something for another; preferably at equivalent value. There are many flaws in our habit that need checkmating. I can say from my little experience, discipline is not an easy task, keeping to that saving routine, that daily timing, that study time and the rest can be boring and inconvenient.

To conclude I will advice you don't be at a rush to replace habit but rather focus on how to hang in there and slow down its momentum. One best way is giving yourself strict measures. For instance, the man you chose over-staying outside could have decided to give himself measures like, I won't talk back no matter what. Or perhaps create extra activities within your home. A small gym to spend 1 hour when you return, a series of self motivational books to run through when you get back. Increase your prayer life and scriptural reading. Get yourself to find an extra hustle in case you are stepping out? The idea is to take advantage of your disadvantage.

I totally enjoyed reading through every single word! You make so much sense and I’m so happy I stopped by to read this.

Replacing our old habits with new ones is not always the best. It’s hard to walk through it but it’s for the best in a long term. No matter how we try to run away from the real problem instead of fixing it, it will always be there waiting for us and even worse, it keeps compiling.
