Diminishing returns: a consequence for deprived well-being
There are many areas one can draft out how deprived well- being promotes diminishing returns. Let's start this way, it can occur when extra efforts to improve or add value to one's well-being can lead to an increasingly smaller gain. We most times continually work out ourselves with the belief that pursuing material possessions will certainly bring us the needed happiness. It mostly ends in pity when we experience diminishing returns as each new possession provides less satisfaction just like the previous ones.
Humans are created to be humanlike, yet, in our pursuit for stability we have gone beyond this. Most times it is as if we are programmed, you know, like robots and we try to be too multifunctional which constantly breaks and drains us, ultimately impacting our overall well-being negatively. This pursuit has in most cases led to a sense of dissatisfaction or even distress despite the continued efforts to enhance our well-being through material means.
There is a need for one to increase their happiness, yet we need to be very cautious in the process. Can't imagine someone believing that burning out himself to buy more and more material possessions will make him happier. There is a time one needs to choose rest rather than work. It's not laziness, it's more of you understanding that happiness first starts internally. At first, purchasing a new item might seem to bring you the needed satisfaction, but as you continue accumulating more and more, the level of happiness gained from each new purchase starts diminishing.
Eventually, the moment your wellbeing is tempered with, you will find out that despite acquiring more, they are no way close to happiness, worst of all when even waxed with the feeling of less contentment. As long as you allow work to barrier your wellbeing, the pursuit of material possessions, driven by the initial belief that it would enhance your well-being may lead to disappointment or a feeling of deprivation when the returns diminish and fail to fulfill their expectations for increased happiness or satisfaction.
It can affect productivity entirely
Let's look at this from the context of businesses and employees. Well-being when addressed from a business environment can include various factors like physical health, mental resilience, job satisfaction, work-life balance, and overall contentment. A little compromise within these factors and you will see how individuals' performance and their collective impact on business operations can face serious depreciation.
There is no doubt, efforts to boost employee well-being in most cases yield substantial improvements in productivity, creativity, and overall performance. There is always a need to adopt simple yet strategic interventions such as flexible working hours, wellness programs, or incentives to promote a positive working culture that can yield noticeable efficiencies in employee morale and output. A lot of businesses center their mode of operation on constantly draining their employees, biting into their private life and keeping them in a niche business environment. What more do you expect on a long run? I know what it feels to be burnout or overstretched, what can easily follow is a production compromise, work absenteeism or an urge to resign and find an environment more suitable to work.
The relationship between well-being and productivity should not be overlooked by organizations because if the root causes of poor well-being persist unaddressed, the returns on investments will likely diminish. It will move from its initial surge in productivity to a later depreciation. Beyond this, the business reputation may be at stake at such points, when consumers perceive a compromise in products or services, they may be forced to seek satisfaction elsewhere.
The need for supportive working environment
As I had earlier tipped, flexibility can be one of the means to curb fatigue in a working environment. The need to promote a workplace culture that encourages open communication, offers support for mental health, and values balanced working life can boost morale and be a motivation. Though there is always a need to bring out the best from employees to promote good business, staying rigid in business rules and regulations can be deterring. Humans are not robots. A lot of people who are working are mostly doing it just for the money, on a good day, they would have abandoned such jobs. Can't really blame them, most times it is as a result of a non-supportive working environment.
Remember those days when I was employed how my colleagues will always be complaining how ungrateful their superiors are. All they are after is burn you out to get the needed work done without any compliments after it is done. You know that old saying, 'Am I not paying you?'. The worst is when an employee gets punished for mistakes made during extra hours at the workplace. We all know most times this mistake is created from fatigue. The health of every worker needs to be highly prioritized.
To conclude let me add, diminishing returns can sprout in our individual lives when we seem to focus more on material things than ourselves. I know sometimes the fear of being poor forces us to outpush ourselves, so also can it be fueled by greed. In life, one needs to realize the boundary that needs to be set between making money and living your personal life. If you continue believing that being materialistic can solve all your problems, I guess you have to buy the whole world. Why burnout yourself to buy things you may end up never using. Time ticks and when you forget yourself all over.
Looking from the angle of businesses and employees, to promote a lasting work efficiency, flexibility needs to be adopted. Overworking employees can also bring numerous negative impacts to a business. The need to create suitable, convenient and favorable working hours can help sustain and refresh employees. Diminishing returns cannot be curbed by only employing professionals, when they are over worked, creativity is likely to diminish. The well- being of employees can be a secret to an efficient and effective working environment.
