Unexpectedly nice: Radeberger Pils non-alcoholic

Yesterday at a friends place, I got offered a beer and did, what I always do, when seeing an interesting or new to me beer: a small, private beer tasting – this time with thw offered Radeberger Pils non-alcoholic. To be honest, I was skeptical at first, because non-alcoholic beers have rarely sparked enthusiasm in me in the past. Many of them seem too “watery” or too sweet to me, or have that typical flavor that I don't like. So I was all the more curious to see how this pilsner would fare – and I can say in advance: it is definitely one of the best non-alcoholic beers I have ever tasted.

What the manufacturer promises

According to the manufacturer, Radeberger Alkoholfrei has a genuine pilsner character and acquires a slight fruity note through the later addition of Callista aroma hops from the Elbe-Saale region. This hop variety is said to preserve more aromatic substances, ensuring an intense flavor even without alcohol. Traditionally, care is taken during brewing to ensure that, despite its alcohol-free status, the beer has a full-bodied, pilsner-typical flavor.
That sounded promising to me, because striking the right balance between hoppy freshness and a strong beer flavor is not always easy to achieve with non-alcoholic varieties.

First of all don't forget to prepare the icy experience

First impressions in the glass

When poured, the light golden color immediately caught my eye—beautifully clear and appealing, just as I imagine a classic pilsner to be. The color appeared cheerful and lively, without appearing cloudy or pale.

The foam was moderately firm: it wasn't as dense and creamy in the glass as I would prefer for a classic tasting. I'm a fan of really nice, firm, dense, creamy foam that lasts a long time. But here you have to make a small concession – the foam was still decent, just not exceptional. And considering the non-alcoholic character, that was perfectly acceptable.

The taste test

Then came the most important moment: the first sip. And I was pleasantly surprised.

Freshness meets mild character: the beer tasted really fresh and surprisingly mild, but by no means boring or “weak.” On the contrary—it had that typical full-bodied beer taste that I usually associate with alcoholic pilsners. It was hoppy, but not too bitter; it was aromatic, but not overpowering. It was precisely this genuine pilsner character, which the manufacturer emphasizes, that was clearly recognizable to me.

The non alcohol label

And what I personally liked most: you hardly noticed the lack of alcohol. That slightly artificial or “alcohol-free” note that makes many varieties unattractive to me was virtually non-existent here. The pilsner had body and flavor without feeling like a “substitute substitute.” This became even clearer with the second and third glasses – it remained pleasant on the palate and developed that pleasantly fresh aftertaste that I appreciate so much in a good pilsner.

Conclusion: Alcohol-free with character

My conclusion is clearly positive: Radeberger Pils alcohol-free really won me over. It combines an appealing color, a pleasant head, and—most importantly—an authentic beer taste that can hold its own against alcoholic pilsners.

If, like me, you are looking for an alcohol-free beer that doesn't disappoint, but instead tastes fresh, mild, and surprisingly “beery,” then this pilsner is definitely worth recommending. A great experience for a first tasting—and certainly not my last!

Even a very nice 3-D pictured lid!
