Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration gameplay and first impressions
Lara Croft goes to Siberia πΊπ§π»π¨οΈ
I love the three newest Tomb Raider games. Some of my best gaming memories are those that I experienced while playing 2018's Shadow of the Tomb Raider, which took place in Mexico and Peru. I briefly played the reboot simply titled Tomb Raider in 2013, but I had never played the one in between those two, Rise of the Tomb Raider. Luckily, it was in my library thanks to it being a free PS Plus title at some point over the years.
Rise of the Tomb Raider, released in 2015, is an action-adventure game developed by Crystal Dynamics and published by Square Enix. Serving as the direct sequel to the 2013 reboot of the series, this installment follows the iconic archaeologist Lara Croft on a quest to uncover the secrets of immortality. The game received widespread acclaim for its compelling narrative, refined gameplay mechanics, and stunning visuals, marking it as a significant entry in the Tomb Raider franchise.
Rise of the Tomb Raider takes place across various stunning and diverse locations around the world. The narrative begins in Siberia, where Lara Croft seeks the lost city of Kitezh and the secrets of immortality. The game's environments are meticulously crafted, ranging from icy mountain landscapes to dense and treacherous forests. As players progress through the story, they explore hidden tombs, encounter dangerous wildlife, and navigate through ancient structures, each location contributing to the overall sense of adventure and discovery.
One notable setting is the hidden city of Kitezh itself, a mythical and ancient place shrouded in mystery. The game also features locations such as the Syrian desert and the geothermal valley, providing a stark contrast with its lush greenery against the harsh, icy backdrop of Siberia. These locales not only serve as visually striking backdrops but also play a crucial role in the game's exploration, puzzle-solving, and combat sequences.
The attention to detail in depicting these various environments contributes to the immersive nature of the game. From the intricate interiors of ancient tombs to the expansive landscapes, Rise of the Tomb Raider successfully transports players to different corners of the globe, enhancing the sense of adventure and making exploration a central element of the overall gaming experience.
The game showcases Lara's growth as a character, both in terms of narrative and gameplay. Players traverse breathtaking environments, from snowy mountain peaks to dense forests, solving intricate puzzles and engaging in intense combat encounters. The emphasis on exploration and discovery remains a core aspect of the game, with players uncovering hidden tombs and relics that contribute to Lara's skills and knowledge. The introduction of a day-night cycle and dynamic weather system adds depth to the immersive world, enhancing the overall player experience.
Rise of the Tomb Raider also introduces a crafting system, allowing players to gather resources from the environment to upgrade weapons and equipment on the fly. The game strikes a balance between action and stealth, providing players with the freedom to approach situations strategically. The intricate level design and detailed landscapes, coupled with the engaging narrative and well-executed gameplay mechanics, earned Rise of the Tomb Raider critical acclaim and solidified Lara Croft's place as one of gaming's enduring protagonists.
Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration is an enhanced edition of Rise of the Tomb Raider. Developed This edition was released in 2016 to commemorate the 20th anniversary of the iconic Tomb Raider franchise. It builds upon the original game's success, offering additional content, improved graphics, and new gameplay experiences.
The 20 Year Celebration edition expands the narrative of Lara Croft's journey, following her pursuit of the Divine Source. The narrative is enriched by the addition of a new story chapter called Blood Ties, providing players with insights into Lara's past and family history. The game also introduces a challenging new difficulty mode, Extreme Survivor, catering to players seeking a more punishing experience.
One of the highlights of the 20 Year Celebration edition is the inclusion of virtual reality support for the PlayStation VR platform. This allows players to experience certain parts of the game in a more immersive way, bringing the world of Lara Croft to life like never before. The enhanced edition received positive reviews for its engaging gameplay, stunning visuals, and thoughtful inclusion of extra content, cementing Rise of the Tomb Raider: 20 Year Celebration as a comprehensive and celebratory package for fans of the franchise.

Played and finished Tomb Raider II&III years ago.
They're such great games!
I have all the TOMB RAIDER in my collection, I just have to sit down and play the games one day hahaha, this one looks very entertaining.
My favorite Tomb Raider game so far is Shadow of the Tomb Raider, but all are worth playing.
First game I ever bought for PlayStation was Tomb Raider - good times.
Hope you are well @daltono

That's awesome! You must be a Laura Croft fan too.
Thank you, things are just fine here. Hope you all are well too. I have a feeling the rest of this year is going to be bountiful for the both of us π€
Thank you, @daltono - it's so good to be heading towards happier times. Ben and I aren't too bad, still wading through Probate, and still trying to finish off the house move! But we're together in all of this, and that's what counts.
Sending you (as always) good vibes and banging tunes.

The story of the game is very good as all the things you mentioned so I will definitely start playing it.
