A souls-like shooter with co-op 🌳🔫😈🤝

I've been keen on giving Remnant II a try for almost a year now. I played the first game and it felt too old and janky for me. I had heard that the latest iteration in the series was much more polished and fresh. Now that I have access to Xbox Game Pass, I finally have a way to try this game without having to spend $30+ risking the fact that I may not even like it.

Remnant II is the well-reviewed sequel to 2019's Remnant: From the Ashes. It is a third-person action role-playing game developed by Gunfire Games and published by Perfect World Entertainment. Released in July of 2023, the game offers a unique blend of challenging combat, exploration, and cooperative gameplay set in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by otherworldly creatures known as the Root. Players take on the role of survivors seeking to reclaim and rebuild civilization while uncovering the mysteries behind the Root invasion. What sets Remnant apart is its dynamic world generation, ensuring that each playthrough offers a fresh and unpredictable experience.

Central to Remnant's gameplay is its challenging combat system, which emphasizes tactical decision-making and skillful execution. Players must utilize a variety of weapons, abilities, and defensive maneuvers to overcome hordes of enemies ranging from grotesque monsters to towering bosses. The game also features a robust progression system, allowing players to customize their characters with unique traits, equipment, and upgrades that suit their playstyle. Whether facing enemies solo or teaming up with friends in multiplayer co-op, Remnant II offers intense and rewarding combat encounters throughout its immersive world.

Beyond its combat mechanics, Remnant: From the Ashes also boasts a rich and atmospheric world to explore. From desolate cityscapes to lush forests and otherworldly dimensions, each environment is intricately designed and filled with secrets to uncover. The game's narrative unfolds through environmental storytelling, hidden lore, and encounters with diverse characters scattered throughout the world. With its challenging gameplay, dynamic world generation, and atmospheric storytelling, Remnant II offers what many call an engaging and replayable experience for fans of Souls-like action RPGs and cooperative gaming alike.

Although there is a lot of good to be said about Remant II, some things about it just didn't stick well with me. The menu and map navigation were both displeasing to me. Then the gameplay itself still had a slight level of jank that I just wasn't okay with. It is certainly better than the first game, but I liked Remnant II a whole lot less than I expected to.
