Ashen gameplay and first impressions
An open-world, indie, Souls-like 🕯️🛡️⚔️🗺️
I found another absolute gem on the PS Plus game catalog recently. This time the surprise was Ashen. This is a gorgeous open-world Souls-like game with a distinctive art style. If I had one phrase to describe this game, it would be "Chill Souls". The graphics, music, and overall tone of the game are just so damn peaceful. Don't let that fool you though, this game can still be plenty difficult.
Ashen is an action RPG that invites players to embark on a captivating journey through a desolate open world, characterized by its haunting landscapes and enigmatic storytelling. Developed by A44 and published by Annapurna Interactive, the game presents a unique take on the Souls genre, emphasizing collaboration, exploration, and the forging of bonds with NPCs. In this expansive and atmospheric world, players must navigate through shadowy environments, engage in strategic combat, and build relationships with characters encountered along the way. The game's emphasis on interconnected gameplay and a sense of shared experience sets it apart, offering a deeply immersive and emotionally resonant adventure.
The combat in Ashen is designed to be methodical and weighty, requiring players to carefully time their attacks, utilize dodges and blocks, and coordinate with NPCs or other real players to overcome formidable adversaries. Yes, this game does indeed have co-op. Players can expect a distinct sense of challenge and satisfaction as they engage in tense battles against various menacing foes, each demanding a unique approach and a keen understanding of the game's combat mechanics. Additionally, the game's focus on cooperative play allows for the seamless integration of other players into the game world, contributing to a sense of camaraderie and shared exploration. If you don't have anybody to play with, then you will still have an AI partner for most of the game.
With its evocative art style, dynamic combat, and a focus on player interaction, Ashen has garnered praise for its ability to deliver a captivating and emotionally engaging experience. The game's emphasis on forging bonds with AI and human-controlled companions and its rich world-building and atmospheric design offers players a deeply immersive and resonant journey through a world shrouded in mystery and danger.
I've been playing a lot of Souls-like games recently. Steel Rising, Demon's Souls, Code Vein, and Thymesia for example. Ashen is one of the best of the bunch. Not because it is the most fancy, but simply because I'm just having so much fun playing this game. Being able to explore such a beautiful and dangerous world is something all fans of the genre should give a chance.
This game is available on all PlayStation, Xbox, Switch, and PC fir an affordable rate. Some may even be able to get it for free like I did.
Enjoy my gameplay video below as I show off one of the dungeons first and then some of this amazing open world.

The art style is similar. The developers of Absolver have a new game called Sifu. I will be posting a video on it soon.
