To Kill A Monkey~A Soulful Review

Movie Trailer

One week after I returned from my service to my country, I was sitting in my mom’s store engrossed in my phone when someone called me by my nickname: Ada.
I looked up and believe me, I couldn’t recognize who was saying hello to me but when I looked closer, I recognized him and I was shocked to my bones.
I just instantly tried to hide my shock and return the greeting.
But immediately he left, tears rolled down my face and I had to ask my mom what happened: she said the man lost his shop due to not being able to pay the rent, his wife ran away with his children and he has been feeding from hand to mouth.
Believe me when I say people are suffering and this movie called To Kill a Monkey reminded me of it.
I don’t think I’ll be doing the normal review I usually do but I’ll just be reviewing this movie based on how it affected me psychologically.
Honestly, this movie was balanced.

Let me give you a little plot review
So Efemini is just a regular guy looking for how to survive and take care of his family.
He has a daughter and a wife who is in labour about to give birth to triplets.
Nothing just seemed to be working for him.

Imagine a graduate working as a waiter and being paid forty-two thousand Naira as a salary.
He is also a tech guru and he’s building software that uses AI to detect loopholes in cybercrime and enhance cybersecurity.
But tell me, what is a dream without funds? A dead dream.

He was used many times including when his manager forced him to sleep with her so she could give him some money and also clear his debt but he got robbed on his way to pay his wife’s hospital bills.

Honestly, I cried so much in this movie.
I felt more emotional when I watched the scene where he almost landed a good job in a tech firm. At the point where they asked him to make his pitch, he reached into his bag for his laptop and was met with a wood. His laptop had been stolen.

IMG_7601.jpeg

Long story cut short, he coincidentally met with an old acquaintance who was neck deep into cybercrime. At first, he didn’t want to soil his hand but when he saw that things were getting worse. Even his newborn could not get milk from their mother because she had nothing to eat, so he had to go back to Oboz- his acquaintance.

When he got into it, he made so much money but the plot twist? He got so neck deep into it and the promise he made to his family about going in and coming out swiftly? He failed. Because that is what evil does, once you go in minding nothing, it will be difficult to come out when you begin to enjoy its dividends. The consequence for his actions caught up with him at the end of the day but will he overcome?

Movie Review
The truth is that cybercrime is bad and evil but let’s face it, in a situation where a man is left with nothing else to do, filled with frustration and nothing seems to be working out and it seems like the whole world is against you and then you are left with the only option of using your knowledge in the opposite direction to make it big in life. What can such a one do?

See the truth is that we only say things like: “I can never do such” when we are not in that person’s shoes or in such a position.
People are suffering and the country we live in does or make it easy for them so what should they do?

Oh well, everyone is indeed left to their own opinion but all I can say is…if tomorrow I see that man in my neighborhood turn to cybercrime just to make ends meet, I would not judge him.

Overall, I would give this movie a solid rating of 10/10 because it did well to explain the whole game of life and its frustrations.

Thanks for reading my blog❤️

I’m sorry but do you know you could be banned for this? This is my blog post and it doesn’t relate with the blog any bit. That’s why I have a Dm on discord. Thank you

That's a great rating there 👍. Seems like I will really need to watch this movie.

As you said, some people dabble into things they had promised theirselves not to do just because of situations and conditions that pushed them to the brink.

Thank you for sharing @daeze-winnie, I love the review

To Kill a Monkey is one of the best Nollywood series I have seen. It pained me that Obozz died. Nice review!
