High Potential~Movie Review
Recently I’ve just been feeling down and maybe that’s because I’ve not seen a good movie that really piques my interest like the one I just finished watching; High Potential. It’s so sad that the release date for the sequel has not been stated so I’m just standing with folded arms. But I just thought to do a review of the first season.
It’s a season with thirteen episodes and I always stayed glued to the net to watch out for each episode release just so I don’t miss it. It’s such an exciting series and I’m so happy to do the review at this moment.
The movie: “High Potential” is a very refreshing crime drama that tells the story of Morgan Gillory. She is a single mother with an extraordinary mind. But despite her high IQ, Morgan faces challenges every day and it did well to remind me that intelligence doesn't exempt one from life's struggles; No, not all. Because there is a saying that goes; “the rain doesn’t select whose roof to drop on”. The series made sure to beautifully balance humor, pain, and the importance of friendship, making it both entertaining and also heartfelt.
PLOT SUMMARY
Morgan Gillory worked as a night cleaner at the Los Angeles Police Department. One night, while cleaning, she accidentally knocked over a box full of crime scene photos. Her sharp eye noticed a mistake. The police had supposedly mistaken the victim for the suspect. This revelation caught the attention of the police department, which led to Morgan’s recruitment as a consultant for the Major Crimes Unit on one condition which was that the Department Chief would help her uncover the whereabouts of her missing ex-husband.
She got to work with Detective Adam Karadec who was a principled officer.
And with his cooperation, Morgan brought her unconventional methods to the team. She used her unique perspective to help solve complex cases, ranging from identifying a jewel thief to uncovering a nanny's murderer. Throughout the whole series, Morgan juggled her new job with the responsibilities of raising her three children while still searching for her missing ex-husband.
MOVIE REVIEW(Spoiler Alert)
Now before I go on to say how beautifully this movie affected me, I have to ask this question: “How do you explain getting married to someone else after losing your ex-husband and not knowing his whereabouts?”
Now that’s actually the question I had throughout the entire movie because I saw how deeply involved Morgan was in trying to uncover the mystery behind her ex-husband’s disappearance but then you see that she already has someone else and they now have kids. Like how do you explain that?
But then maybe the movie was just trying to infuse this lesson into the whole story and that is: Even Geniuses Need Help.
Morgan's high intelligence didn’t shield her from life's issues. She navigated the challenges of single parenthood, financial strain, and personal loss too. The series showcased that seeking help is actually a sign of strength and not weakness.
I also saw the place of workplace friendship and believe me, true friendship in the workplace fosters healthy growth and development. Initially, with Morgan, there was skepticism, especially with Detective Karadec. He just saw the idea of consulting a “cleaner” as absurd. I don’t blame him because that’s so relatable but after some time of working together and giving her the benefit of the doubt, they developed trust in each other and became her support system too.
*The movie also did well to balance humor and pain. Morgan was always seen to have this comedic side and quirky behavior and I think that’s what helped her to overcome her emotional troubles. There was this scene where she crashed Karadec’s date with her children just because she discovered a new clue in some case they were working on. It was such a hilarious scene.
The last episode was so suspense-filled bringing me into the question if finally, Morgan had seen her husband or was it just another criminal they needed to apprehend.
So I can’t wait to see the sequel.*
Overall, the movie High Potential is such a compelling series that shows the complexities of life through the lens of a brilliant yet relatable woman. It reminded me that intelligence doesn’t equate perfection and we all need support, friendship and fun to navigate life and its challenges.
I would gladly give this movie a 9.5/10.
I leave you with the trailer.
