Supporting Determination Through Hard Times

Everyone of us has needed help at some points in life, and it feels incredibly gratifying to have someone step in to support us. Based on this week's prompt, I would recount an experience of lending a helping hand to someone in need and it left a lasting impact in both our lives.

During my college years, I lived in an hostel off campus (all hostels were off campus then) and had a neighbor who left a significant impression on me. I went through an affiliate programme of another school in the college I attended. I did a degree program while this neighbor of mine went for NCE (National Certificate in Education). She was a married woman with three kids, the youngest of whom stayed with her in the hostel. What I admired about her was her determination to go school and change her family's narrative. She always mentioned how none of her family members made it to college and she was resolved to being first against all odds.

One morning, I went to get something outside the hostel and I met her sitting comfortably next to a vendor, having conversations with her. It struck me as odd because it was early, she wasn't one to engage in such, even her position didn't seem like one who would leave the place early. Out of concern, I asked her why she was there at that time. Her response was both shocking and heartbreaking. She explained that she left her child with someone in the hostel and came outside to pass the time so that the little food they had at home would be enough for the evening. She added that she had grown weary of going to other members of the hostel for help.

Without hesitation, I invited her back to the hostel with me, to my room. I gave her enough from my food supplies that would be enough for the rest of the day. I also encouraged her to come to me whenever she needed assistance.
Her response was a mix of relief and gratitude and she expressed her appreciation with heartfelt words.

This event fostered a close relationship between us. She was surprised I could lend her a helping hand like I did. Our friendship grew from sharing food supplies. I gave her a free pass to share her burdens with me as navigating school then was without support but her determination. She persevered despite the challenges until she graduated. Being a part of her success story filled me with great joy.

The last time I heard from her was while I was observing my one year youth service. She was in Dubai. She called to express heartfelt gratitude for the support she received during campus days. She joyfully narrated how she left the country and how she was planning to have her husband kids over. I was glad she made progress and knowing that I made a significant contribution in her journey was fulfilling.

The experience taught me the profound impact of kindness and support and that a simple act of generosity can make a difference in someone's life. It also taught me that, lending a helping hand is not only for others, it gives us a sense of fulfilment as well. Seeing her succeed in spite of all odds is a testament to the strength of man's spirit and the impact of supporting one another.

In conclusion, helping others should not be underestimated as you might just be a catalyst that propels someone to achieving their dreams. For me, being a part of my neighbor is a memory I'll always cherish.

One of the things I find impressive about the experience you shared is that you went beyond just giving her food stuff. You made her feel comfortable to share her problems with you and that's a big deal for me.

Supporting people emotionally is one of the great ways to help and I bet she will never forget the impact you had on her.
