Grow as you Go | Overcoming Perfectionism

One of the most valuable lessons I have learnt in these past months is that waiting for perfection can be a significant barrier to progress. The idea that everything must be perfect before starting is a misconception that can paralyze potentials.

For a long time I've found myself stuck in a cycle of waiting for the perfect timing to start various ventures. I believed that to begin, I need to have everything in order- the knowledge, the equipments and funds. The mindset of perfectionism held me back from pursuing my goals and ambitions. I would always have an excuse as to why I can't start the venture. It was later I realized the power of starting with what you have and growing along the way.

The truth is, you don't need to have all the answers or resources upfront. What matters is taking that initial step, and being willing to learn and adapt as you go.
When I reflect on the ventures I delayed, I discovered that it wasn't having all to start that was the problem but the fear of failure. I was afraid to hear my customers complain about their clothes. I wanted to be the designer that does all things well. I was afraid that without the perfect plan I would fail and my inadequacy will be visible to all. Well, the reality is that failure is inevitable especially as an entrepreneur.

Did I fail when I decided to start with what I have? I did, countless times but the joy is that with each failure, I became better. My improvement was as visible as my failure. What I didn't know was that with each failure comes an opportunity to learn, grow and improve. Embracing this mindset can liberate you from the hold of perfectionism.

Starting with what you have can be empowering. It gives you the opportunity to leverage your current skills, resources and knowledge to create something tangible. Challenges and obstacles will surely surface but they'll serve as experiences for your personal and professional growth. They teach you resilience, and problem solving.

Moreover, the process of starting your venture can reveal opportunities and insights that you cannot have anticipated at the planning stage. As you get into motion you're more likely to meet people, encounter situations and have experiences that can enhance your venture.

Perfectionism can affect your creativity and innovation. When you're set to start out perfect, you are less likely to take risks or try the unconventional ideas. By trying out with what you have, you give yourself the chance to explore and open up for creativity to flourish. You can carefully and freely experiment and eventually find your footing.

One crucial realization for me was understanding that growth is a continuous process and I seemed to exclude that out of my plans. You don't need to know everything at the onset. Instead, be open to learning and growing along the way. Accept feedback, be open to new ideas and adapt.

So if you are like me and you are waiting for the perfect moment to start your venture or whatever you want to do, consider this as a signal to act now. Start with want you have and trust that you will learn, improve and grow as you go. Don't be handcuffed by the fear of failure. It's part of the journey. In fact, do it afraid. Remember, progress is more important than perfection. You set yourself on a path of continuous growth and discovery as you take your first light step.

Start small and start right.

I am rooting for you.
