Jesus died on the cross and received the punishment that every human being deserved as a consequence of sin.

29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, "Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world. 30 This is the one I spoke of when I said, 'After me comes a man who is preferred before me, for he was before me.' 31 I did not know him, but I came baptizing with water so that he might be revealed to Israel." 32 John also bore witness, saying, "I saw the Spirit descending like a dove from heaven, and it remained on him." 33 I did not know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water said to me, 'On whomever you see the Spirit descending and remaining, this is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.' 34 And I saw and have borne witness that this is the Son of God." 35 The next day John was standing there again with two of his disciples. 36 And looking at Jesus as he walked, he said, "Behold, the Lamb of God!" John 1:29-36

In the Bible, we find different names given to Jesus, sometimes Messiah, Lord, Christ, Teacher, Rabbi, but there is one that is perhaps the least common in today's world, which is, so to speak, the Lamb of God. We generally have limited knowledge of both the culture and history of the Jewish people, so our understanding of this name designated for Jesus Christ is often limited. However, the Israelites of Jesus' time knew this meaning very well, since in ancient times, lambs, the best lambs, were destined to be sacrificed for the forgiveness of sins.

God's dealing with human sin has always been through sacrifice. Let's remember, for example, when Adam and Eve sinned, they were covered with animal skin, and for this, an animal was sacrificed. In this way, not only their nakedness was covered, but also their shame. Later, Passover was celebrated, where each Israelite marked their doorstep with blood, and this blood came from the sacrifice of an animal.

The Lord spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying: 2 This month shall be the beginning of months for you; it shall be the first month of the year for you. 3 Say to all the congregation of Israel, On the tenth of this month each man is to take for himself a lamb according to the households of his fathers, a lamb per household. 4 But if the household is too small to eat a lamb, then he and his nearest neighbor shall take one according to the number of persons; according to what each man has eaten, you shall make a count of the lamb. 5 The animal shall be without blemish, a one-year-old male; you shall take it from the sheep or the goats. 6 You shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month, and all the congregation of the people of Israel shall slaughter it at twilight. 7 They shall take some of the blood and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel of the houses where they eat it.

Exodus 12:1-7

Then we see the sacrifice that would atone for sin, thus redeeming all of humanity. This is definitely the supreme sacrifice of the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.

Jesús murió en la cruz y recibió ese castigo que merecía cada ser humano por consecuencia del pecado.

29 El siguiente día vio Juan a Jesús que venía a él, y dijo: He aquí el Cordero de Dios, que quita el pecado del mundo. 30 Este es aquel de quien yo dije: Después de mí viene un varón, el cual es antes de mí; porque era primero que yo. 31 Y yo no le conocía; mas para que fuese manifestado a Israel, por esto vine yo bautizando con agua. 32 También dio Juan testimonio, diciendo: Vi al Espíritu que descendía del cielo como paloma, y permaneció sobre él. 33 Y yo no le conocía; pero el que me envió a bautizar con agua, aquel me dijo: Sobre quien veas descender el Espíritu y que permanece sobre él, ese es el que bautiza con el Espíritu Santo. 34 Y yo le vi, y he dado testimonio de que este es el Hijo de Dios.

En la biblia encontramos diferentes nombres que se le da a Jesús, en algunas ocasiones el mesías, el señor, Cristo, maestro, Rabí, pero hay uno que quizá sea el menos común para el mundo actual que es abro comillas Cordero de Dios". Generalmente tenemos un conocimiento limitado tanto de la cultura como de la historia del pueblo judío por lo que suele ser limitado nuestro entendimiento acerca de este nombre designado a Jesucristo, sin embargo los israelitas contemporáneos de Jesús conocía muy bien ese significado ya que antiguamente los corderos, los mejores corderos eran destinados al sacrificio por el perdón de los pecados.

El trato de Dios con el pecado del hombre siempre fue a través de sacrificio, recordemos por ejemplo cuando Adán y Eva habían pecado, ellos fueron cubierto con piel de animal y para ello se sacrificó un animal, de esta manera se cubrió no sólo su desnudez, también su vergüenza. Posteriormente se celebró la Pascua donde cada israelita marcó el umbral de su puerta con sangre, y esta provenía del sacrificio de un animal.

Habló Jehová a Moisés y a Aarón en la tierra de Egipto, diciendo: 2 Este mes os será principio de los meses; para vosotros será este el primero en los meses del año. 3 Hablad a toda la congregación de Israel, diciendo: En el diez de este mes tómese cada uno un cordero según las familias de los padres, un cordero por familia. 4 Mas si la familia fuere tan pequeña que no baste para comer el cordero, entonces él y su vecino inmediato a su casa tomarán uno según el número de las personas; conforme al comer de cada hombre, haréis la cuenta sobre el cordero. 5 El animal será sin defecto, macho de un año; lo tomaréis de las ovejas o de las cabras. 6 Y lo guardaréis hasta el día catorce de este mes, y lo inmolará toda la congregación del pueblo de Israel entre las dos tardes. 7 Y tomarán de la sangre, y la pondrán en los dos postes y en el dintel de las casas en que lo han de comer.
