We Can Only Do Our BEST, Right?

I often wonder whether or not my efforts — at almost anything — are "good enough," on the great scale of existence.

I set myself goals; I have ambitions, aspirations and hopes... but are they enough?

"Comparison" is definitely a part of the Human Experience. We're always comparing ourselves to others, or to societal standards, or even to ourselves during different points in life.

Sometimes those comparisons might seem inspirational, but much of the time they just feel depressing.

"I'm not doing very well, compared to where I was HOPING to be!"

Somewhere along the way, we were probably told that things would become better with time, as we gain more experience; more skills; more stamina. What's often omitted from the equation is the "other" reality: That we now have more competition from more people, possibly with better qualifications than us. And when that happens, it can feel like we're moving backwards.

Always Do Your Best!

Many people grow up with the lesson that we should always do our best.

And that's definitely a noble thing to aspire to... but what about those life scenarios where "our best" simply isn't enough? Few of us are trained in how to deal with those!

"I don't understand! I did my BEST!"

And so did the person who won the bronze medal in some discipline at the Olympic Games. But even their best — including all those days and years of training — turned out to not be enough.

It's a risk we all run, when we embark on pretty much any challenge that stretches our boundaries and abilities.

I tend to be a bit impulsive at times, and that sometimes lands me in situations where I — retrospectively — realize that I am in over my head. At which point I have to accept that all I can do is my best, even if there's a good chance it won't be enough.

But short of "cheating" in some way, there legitimately isn't anything above "doing our best," is there?

Maybe that sounds painfully obvious... but sometimes I think it bears repeating!
