Why Hive's Self-Check Moment Matters
Lately, I’ve been feeling that something interesting is shifting inside the Hive community.
On one side, there’s clearly more development happening, new ideas, new tools, new infra. On the other side, there’s also more awareness around how we’re spending from the community fund. These two things happening at the same time feel important to me, because it’s like Hive is not just building forward, it’s also looking in the mirror and asking, “Are we using our resources wisely?”
For a decentralized chain, I see that as a very healthy direction.
We always say decentralization is a strength, and I still believe that. No central company, no CEO, no VCs. But decentralization comes with its own challenges, and one of the biggest ones, as Magi Network pointed out in their post, is coordination. When there’s no single boss, how do you make sure everyone’s not just pulling in different directions? How do you avoid overlapping efforts, or worse, wasting shared funds on things that don’t move Hive forward?
That’s where I think we’ve struggled for a while.
When Hive forked away from the legacy chain, we gained full freedom. That was powerful. We no longer depended on a company to “lead” us. We had a DAO, the DHF, and stake-weighted voting so anyone with skin in the game could influence what gets funded. On paper, that sounds like the dream. But over time, we also saw another side of that freedom: multiple teams building similar things, redundant use cases, and proposals that sometimes overlapped instead of complementing each other.
The result isn’t efficient enough.
Recently though, I’ve been reading more posts from devs and community members openly calling this out, and that’s what made me feel like, “Okay, it’s not just in my head. People see it too.” The fact that builders themselves are acknowledging the redundancy issue is a good sign for me. It means the problem is real, but it’s also visible now, and once something is visible, it can be fixed.
These are the kinds of eye-opening blogs I want more people to write and talk about.
Another topic that ties into this is the discussion around DHF spending and HBD yield. 3Speak and others have been raising concerns about overspending from the community fund and how the current mechanics might be bleeding too much value out of the ecosystem. It’s not fun to read about “tightening budgets” or “cutting yields,” because it sounds bearish at first, but I think these conversations are necessary. If the chain is trending down in price and user growth, yet spending remains high, something eventually has to give.
For me, DHF spending should always come back to a simple question:
Is this proposal helping Hive become stronger in the long run?
Stronger can mean better UX, better onboarding, better infra, more liquidity, or more real users. If a project doesn’t support those things in some way, then maintaining that spending while the chain is clearly struggling doesn’t make sense.
I also like that the tone of many of these posts isn’t “witch hunt” or cancel culture. It’s more like, “Let’s be smarter with how we do this.” That’s the energy I want to see. We don’t need to centralize Hive or create some corporate board to control everything. What we do need is better coordination between dev teams, curators, stakeholders, and communities, so efforts become complementary instead of fragmented.
In my mind, the ideal future looks like this:
- DHF proposals are easier to compare, with clearer goals and less overlap.
- Major infra and social projects talk to each other more, so we don’t rebuild the same use-case multiple times.
- Stakeholders feel more confident voting “no” on things that don’t align with Hive’s long-term health, even if it’s uncomfortable.
- Discussions about cuts or changes are seen as maintenance, not FUD.
Because at the end of the day, decentralization doesn’t mean “everyone just does whatever they want forever.” It means we share responsibility for where this chain goes. And right now, I feel like Hive is in that uncomfortable but necessary phase where we start cleaning up, tightening the bolts, and making sure the next stage of growth is built on solid foundations, not just vibes.
My hope is that all these discussions don’t just remain as blog posts or Snaps (or Threads or Waves). I want to see concrete actions follow, whether that’s updated funding standards, better coordination frameworks between projects, or even simple dashboards that show where DHF money is going and what impact it’s actually making.
If we get this right, I believe Hive can come out of this season more resilient than before, not just technically, but also financially and socially.
The tech is strong. The community is dedicated. Now it’s time to align those two with better coordination.

Love these posts, keep making them. Hope we can have it all. I heard you on the topic of overlap. But remember steem also had a los of overlapping apps. All type of apps, some better than the others, but there was also a sense of many cooks in the kitchen, and I think that is part of a FOSS environment. Scratch your own itch and many people experience the same itch in different ways. I see the microblogging issue as a problem and also the many games that are not quite finished take forever.
Thanks man... and yes, that's the beauty and chaos of FOSS. True overlap is almost inevitable, but I hope it can be lessened. But I agree... unfinished games and repeated microblogging apps do show that coordination still has plenty of room to improve. Hopefully this “self-check” moment pushes us toward smarter alignment.

Still, seeing that there are progress and change on Hive made me believe that Hive will stay forever with us. Like everyone is working hard, there's more growth, its moving. If you didn't know I've been getting downvoted for a long time on Hive
They have been trying to bully me with downvotes and words but it doesn't affect me I've been online for over 25 years
So I've dealt with people like this before it's nothing new
But what they are doing is bad Very badi joined steemit like everyone else thinking it offers freedom but I must say steemit offered much more freedom than Hive does
Everyone already knows I only post my own original content I have no need to steal anything from anyone
I've been labelled a lot of things on Hive 😂 by the biggest farmers scammers and downvoters
Actions speak louder than any words do especially when them words are coming from a compolsive liars
