Above the Clouds... A Sweater Weather Escape to Baguio City

Clouds were hanging low the day I stepped into Baguio... soft, heavy, and dramatic, like the sky was trying to hug the mountains. I’ve always been thankful for these quick escapes. Even if I can only travel within Southeast Asia for now, I still feel rich in experiences… especially when the trip includes dear friends and a brand-new city to explore.

They call Baguio the Summer Capital of the Philippines, and honestly, it makes sense the moment you feel the air. February here was giving me temperatures around 23°C down to 13°C, which meant something very important for a Singapore-based wanderer: my sweaters finally got to see daylight. I had jackets sitting in my cabinet like they were in long-term storage, and Baguio basically said, “Bring them out, this is your moment.”

One of the first things that amazed me wasn’t even a tourist spot, it was the city itself. Baguio feels like it was built with equal parts ambition and bravery. Houses cling to slopes, perched on steep sides like they’re casually defying gravity. There were moments I’d stare at a cluster of homes stacked along a cliff and think, How is this stable? (My brain was already imagining the “LOL” scenario.) But instead of looking fragile, the city looks… confident. Like the builders and the locals simply decided, “Yes, we can live here,” and made it happen.

Walking around gave me a real glimpse of how alive the streets are. People moved in every direction, students heading to school, professionals walking through sidewalks, vendors in their daily hustle, cars buzzing everywhere. It’s busy, but it’s a kind of busy that feels human. Not chaotic, just full. The city has a pulse, and you feel it in the footsteps and honks and conversations floating past you.

Let me show you the kind of views that made me stop mid-walk.

From a higher vantage point, standing on a viewing deck, I finally understood the scale of Baguio. The hills roll outward like a layered map, with rooftops scattered across the slopes and clouds sweeping over the city like slow waves. Somewhere in the distance, I spotted a church with twin spires standing out from the skyline, quietly claiming its place as a landmark you can navigate by. That moment hit me: Baguio’s city life seems to orbit around two anchors, the church and shopping, and somehow, both feel equally central to the rhythm here.

When I eventually made my way closer, the church presence became even stronger. The steps leading up were busy with people, cars passing by, and that familiar city soundscape. And then, there it was: a grand façade with twin towers, looking both imposing and welcoming at the same time. Even if you’re not intentionally searching for it, you’ll end up being guided there by the city itself.

In between all of that, Baguio surprised me with details: a roundabout centerpiece that looked like a seasonal installation, public art made from metal parts that felt unexpectedly creative, and little streets that dip and climb like the city is constantly testing your legs (good thing the weather makes walking enjoyable).

By the end of the day, I realized this wasn’t just another “quick trip.” Baguio has a personality, a mix of culture, climate, and mountain-built courage that shows right on its face. And as I stood there looking out at the city under those shifting clouds, I felt grateful. Even short travels can be meaningful… especially when a place surprises you this much.
