The Fire That Tested What I Value Most

What is the first thing you’d grab if a fire broke out near your home?

Almost three weeks ago, a fire broke out just a few houses away from ours. Until now, whenever I step outside or pass by our street, I still hear our neighbors talking about it. Replaying how it started. How big it got. How frightening it was.

It was a Saturday morning. I had just gone to bed at around 6 AM after finishing some work. Everyone in the house was still asleep since it was the weekend. At around 8 AM, I was suddenly awakened by my mom bursting into the room. She didn’t even bother to knock. She just pushed the door open and shouted..

“There’s a fire, hurry up!”

Still half-asleep, I jumped out of bed in my PJs and socks. I didn’t even bother turning off the aircon. I grabbed my phone from the side of my bed and hurried out.

The first thing that came to my mind was my pet, so I carried him with me as I went to the living room, where my mom and sisters were already panicking.

Our house is at the very end of the street. That’s usually peaceful, but in that moment it was terrifying. If the fire spread quickly and reached the house beside us, it would be hard for us to escape. That thought made me more nervous.

My dad, on the other hand, was already outside helping the neighbors. He was the one who saw the fire first, and he made sure to warn everyone nearby. And that actually made my mom mad. She found out about the fire late, not from my dad, but from neighbors shouting “Sunog!” (fire). She had even checked from the restroom window, then the balcony, before realizing it was already just three or four houses away. She was furious and scared at the same time.

the smoke, view from our balcony

Later on, my dad explained. He saw how close the fire already was to the neighbors, and some of them were still asleep. There were a lot of children inside those houses, and no one was panicking yet, even though the fire was already getting big. He shouted, woke them up, and made sure they were aware first. And honestly, I understood his logic. We were still safe. We had a few more minutes. And in that moment, he chose to make sure others were safe too.

What made us even more anxious was knowing that right behind the burning house was a liquid petroleum gas (LPG) shop!

Our family went out to secure a spot where we're safe. My mom and sisters had their bags with them, carrying what they thought were essentials. And me? I was just standing there, holding my pet and my phone.

I didn’t bring anything else. My mom told me to get my essentials quickly. So, I rushed back inside, and saw the house was wide open with the aircon still running. My mind went blank. What should I take? What should I save? I have laptops, gadgets, heavy coin banks, and even documents, but the more I think about it, the harder it was to decide. My brain wasn’t “braining.” The smoke outside and the shouts of our neighbors made it hard to think clearly.

In the end, I grabbed one of my bags, stuffed in my gadgets and chargers, especially the ones I use for work, then picked up my wallet and IDs. I told myself that those are enough. I left behind my coin banks that I had been filling for months because they were too heavy to carry. The other files could be replaced.

What mattered to me was making sure my family and pets were safe. That realization hit me hard. Everything we own is temporary. At the end of the day, they’re just “things.” I wasn’t as attached to them as I thought. But others weren’t as lucky that day.

Outside, things were chaotic. The fire was growing. The smoke was thick, and people were crying. My sister’s playmate was in tears because she woke up to her mom pulling her out of bed because of the fire. That panic… that fear… I felt it too.

Then my aunt suddenly rushed near our house. She works near our place and ran over when she heard there was a fire. She thought it had already reached us and wanted to make sure we're okay. I'll never forget that moment. Her face was pale... her heavy breathing from running... all because she cares.

When the fire trucks finally arrived, we felt a little relief... only to find out they didn’t have water. Neighbors helped with buckets of water, while the smoke grew thicker, and while my mom kept repeating asking the same questions... Why do we live here? Why at the very end of the street?

More fire trucks eventually came and soon after, the fire was finally put out. But two houses down, and another one badly damaged. Had the fire reached the other two houses, ours would have been next. All because of a candle. So small and yet it changed so many lives that day.

That morning changed the way I looked at things. I realized how quickly everything can disappear. And I realized, too, that it’s not the material things we’ll fight to save in moments like this. It’s the people we love.

Whenever that morning comes to mind, I'm reminded of what really matters.

If you were in my shoes that morning, what would you bring first?

I appreciate you reading this all the way through 💖 Thanks for your time!

Omg! That's so scary! And I think I also understand your pudrabels, lalo if may mga bata. I actually find that really cool thinking about those closer to the fire esp the kids. And I think, if it happened to us i'll panic too. But, I am also sure that Mommy D will force me na intindihin ang dapat intindihin so baka makabawi din ako agad. Saming tatlo sya yong laging mabilis mag act kahit naga panic. And I am so glad you get your pet first before anything else ❤️✨. And no one got hurt, it is still sad na may nasirang kabahayan. I hope makabangon sila agad.

If it's me, I'll surely get all my documents and my notebook where my pass phrases is written. For out cats, the small one naka cage sila so we can just carry them with us. For the older cats, i am sure they already know what to do. They will follow us that's 4 sure. Pero we can just put them in a cage too if ever and bring them with us. But I don't even want to think about this. I'll panic talaga. We experienced something similar to this last month. It five house away from us, it's a small fire but we panic pa rin. Nakakatakot gabi pa. But nakatawag din agad ng bombero so naagapan naman thanks God.

And I think as a lesson learned na rin, dapat may emergency bag talaga tayo kunt saan we can put important things there so if ever a disaster happened, we can just grab them. Ganon diba.

I'm glad my dad did it, too! Kasi kung hindi sila nagising, baka nasaktan sila bec of the fire.

I hope makabangon sila agad.

Yes, our barangay helped them. May assistance din na binigay sa kanila para makapagpagawa ulit ng mga nasira.

If it's me, I'll surely get all my documents and my notebook where my pass phrases is written.

ITO YUNG HINDI KO NAALALA HAHAHAHAHA I also have a separate notebook for this. Sadly, hindi ko naalala nung nagppack ako. Now, nakasecure na para if may emergency ulit, isang kuhaan na lang.

Huy buti naagapan! Ayun nga rin yung iniisip namin, what if gabi? Tapos yung fire hydrant pa dito ang layo 😔

Yes, lesson learned talaga. We do have an emergency bag pero iba mga nakalagay. That's for evacuating lang talaga, but not the files and other stuff pa huhu kaya now, nag ayos talaga kami.

Thanks Ruffa! 🤗

Your dad running to alert sleeping neighbors before anything else really stuck with me. In that kind of rush I’d grab my pet, my wallet and keys, and the tiny SSD with my backups. I’d probably end up in mismatched slippers too. Did this push you to set up a small go-bag or some cloud backups?

Same!! It was brave of my dad to wake them up even when the fire's already near!

Yesss! All the essentials are already in the go-bag in case this happens again. I’ve also backed up all my files :)

Thanks for dropping by!

Your dad’s instincts probably saved lives. Awesome that your go-bag and backups are done. Set a reminder to check expiry dates and keep the power bank topped up, and maybe tuck in copies of IDs and some cash. Fingers crossed you never need any of it, but you’ll sleep better knowing it’s there.

luhh. kakatakot yan, buti na lang di kayo inabutan.

we are taught to keep important files in containers. so if ever, ipapatong ko sa higaan ni mother(na bedridden) tapos un, lalabas.

true noh. ako din, my computer, things I bought~ di siya ganun ka importante if emergency na talaga. because they are replaceable ( except that limited figure somewhere 😂)

That was a close call, good to see that it didn't reach your house. Candles are really dangerous, our house nearly got burned down due to one during one typhoon.

Adrenaline rush is also amazing, as people suddenly can lift things when needed. It was due to a burning 20" CRT TV; thankfully it got isolated easily.

Hope everyone is fine in your neighborhood after the fire.

oh noes! anong nangyari? Nakalimutan ba?

Adrenaline rush is also amazing

I agree! I've seen our neighbors lifting lots of things all at once. Grabe.

One of our neighbors got a bruise lang sa arms kasi late na nakalabas ng bahay kasi ang lalim ng tulog.

I'm glad you and your family are safe. I can totally relate sa "my brain wasn't braining." because it is really chaotic in these situations. Had a small discussion din sa amin about having a "go bag" ready in case of emergencies and also what are the things that can be done to secure the family and pets. Safety is the first priority.

You should be proud of your dad for waking up the neighbors because it might have become a bigger disaster kung may nasaktan. Parang action movie, noh? Lastly, Thank God that it remained small and point of reflection siguro ito in our life moving forward. So many lessons for you in the next few years from this single experience. God bless and have a better day ahead!

I'm late sa pag comment kakabasa ko lang 🥹 I'm glad okay lang kayo c!

I remember the first time i felt the panic when one of our neighbours had a fire as well, i had to go out and check while my mom was panicking with what important things to get.. but thankfully the firefighters put out the fire on time..after That day my mom bought a small cabinet and stored all the documents ng titolo ng lupa namin, and instructed us kahit anong mangyari it will be the number 1 priority pag may sunog, iwanan na daw lahat wag lang tlga yon..

Tho after that i thought ano kunin ko, wala me much important na gamit other than my gadget or passport (kasi strict DFA) i don't mind if my paintings would get burned basta prio life...

Anyways! Katakot yong may LPG na malapit... Kahit isa nga katakot na ano nalang yan shop pa, but So glad you and your family is safe 💞 Ready kana next time!

Uy thanks for reading this kahit late! Hahaha
After talaga ng ganyan natin narerealize kung ano dapat talaga issecure eh no.
Prio talaga safety ng loved ones and files na mahirap ulit makuha.

True, kaya sobrang kabado lahat ng nasa neighborhood namin that morning, kasi if maabutan ung LPG shop, for sure sobrang laki ng sunog. Glad we're all safe! Thanks Jude 🤗
