My time in Ecuador – A travel report – part 3

444.JPG

This is part 3 of my travel report from Ecuador. Here you can find the first part with the arrival, initial difficulties and a big challenge for me and the second part with my time in the rainforest.

In today's part of my short travel report, we leave the Oriente and head to the coast via Puyo and Baños de Agua Santa.

Goodbye rainforest

After four weeks, my time at the Fundacion was already over, it felt like four days. So we bought a few bottles of rum and cola, squeezed some of our giant limes and had a little farewell party. I'll spare you the photos of that evening. Just this much: even the moon had horns and the dog danced.

I realised at that moment how much I was going to miss this place and its people. Not the mosquitoes, definitely not them.

The round trip begins

The round trip begins, at least that's what we thought. Shortly after the ride began, it was already over again. The bridge was broken. But the next bus was already waiting on the other side of the river. So we just had to get our luggage across. Not so easy after the last night I mentioned.

After a short journey, we reached Tena, where we spent another night in a friend's hostel and did some food shopping.

Puyo

The next day we travelled via Puerto Napo to Puyo. Nearby, an elderly gentleman has created a little paradise in the middle of his sugar cane field with a fish pond, pool, tree house and an underground hotel in planning. I would like to know what has got out of the project.

Soy un Matapalo

At the time, a stay in paradise cost one dollar per person, including a bath and the company of butterflies.

The gentleman produced puro, a schnapps, from his sugar cane and invited us to taste it. It was a lot of fun, even the parrot had to laugh at us.

Watch your money

Afterwards, we continued on our way to the coast and then back to Puyo, because I was suddenly short of a considerable amount from my travelling fund and instead had fake money mixed in with my notes. Unfortunately, the local police still haven't found the money after 21 years.
And now I also know why they have the safe in the hotel.

Baños de Agua Santa

Back to Baños, a town that really impressed me. The altitude, the greenery, the proximity to the Tungurahua volcano.

We climbed the mountain to the statue of the Virgin Mary, La Virgen. The path leads through a cemetery and is very impressive on its own. It is situated high above the city and offers a breathtaking view, also thanks to the strenuous climb. But it's really worth it.

A little luxury is a must, so we hired these brand new motorbikes for 2 hours and explored the surrounding area. An unforgettable experience.

Before the volcano erupts, we set off again. We want to get to Montañita on the Pacific. The route takes us over the mountains to the bus station in Guayaquil, where we change buses. I still don't know whether the military checkpoint in the middle of the night on a mountain pass scared me or calmed me down.

We'll see whether we arrived safely on the coast in the next part. And maybe we'll even see a whale.

This is the third part of my little travel report. I hope you enjoyed it and see you in the next part. Here you can find the the first part and second part.

It is a very special place
I like the scenery
The landscape make it difficult to transport and access, but it is possible to make it a beautiful reality.
