Heading South [ENG-PT/BR]

The vast majority of Portuguese people take their vacations in August. In the south, in the Algarve, where the climate is warm and sunny, thousands of Portuguese and tourists occupy the extensive sandy beaches with privileged views of the sea.

Faro, the capital of the Algarve, is my second home. I have been visiting it at least twice a year for over 30 years to be with part of my family: a sister, two nieces, and a grandnephew.

Besides my family, I spend most of my time at the beach. In this case, I am quite selfish. I don't want people around, I don't want to hear the crying of (wonderful) children or the barking of dogs, which are now allowed on most beaches.

I don't want noise, I avoid human presence. The only sounds allowed are the sea rolling onto the sand, the laughter of seagulls and other species of birds that inhabit this region. So, the more deserted, the better.

From Fuzeta to Ancão beach, there are countless spots where I can be myself and nothing else. This is where I take stock, prepare for the rest of the year and, fundamentally, clear away everything that doesn't matter. The fact that there are no other people, or other things to distract me, makes everything more revealing.

Sometimes we carry trash around thinking it's gold. It is here, in the scorching sun, that I seek answers in the ocean waves. They come and go freely in perfect motion. It is in this freedom that many of the answers appear.

It is in these uninhabited spots that many species lay down their carcasses at the end of their lives. Perfect places even to die.

Rumo ao Sul

A grande maioria dos portugueses passam férias em Agosto. A sul, no Algarve, onde o clima é quente e solarengo, milhares de portugueses e turistas ocupam os extensos areais com vistas privilegiadas para o mar.

Faro, capital do Algarve, é a minha segunda cidade. Há mais de 30 anos que a visito pelo menos duas vezes por ano, para estar com parte da minha família: uma irmã, duas sobrinhas e um sobrinho neto.

Além da família, o meu tempo é ocupado nas praias. Neste caso sou bastante egoísta. Não quero pessoas, não quero o choro das (maravilhosas) crianças nem o latir de cães que agora são permitidos na grande maioria de praia.

Não quero barulho, evito a presença humana. Os únicos sons permitidos são o mar a enrolar-se na areia, o riso das gaivotas e outras espécies de aves que habitam nesta região. Por isso, quanto mais deserta melhor.

Da Fuzeta até à praia do Ancão são inúmeros os spots onde posso estar eu e mais eu. É aqui que faço balanços, que preparo o resto do ano e, fundamentalmente, limpo tudo o que não interessa. O facto de não haver mais pessoas, nem outras coisas que me tiram o foco, tudo se torna mais revelador.

Por vezes carregamos lixo a pensar que é ouro. É aqui, na torreira do sol, que procuro respostas nas ondas do oceano. Vão e vêm livremente em movimento perfeitos. É nessa liberdade que muitas das respostas aparecem.

São nestes spots sem gente que muitas espécies depositam a sua carcaça em fim de vida. Locais perfeitos até para morrer.
