Between geometries and other directions [ENG-PT/BR]

To contextualize this series of photographs that I am sharing in the #monomad contest, it is important to tell you that I get around on foot in my daily life. I don't have a car, nor do I have a driver's license. I use public transportation (bus, Uber, or taxi) only when I have time constraints. Out of conviction, I do without this luxury, which for many is a necessity.

Walking is a fundamental exercise of our freedom and an act of rebellion against the speed of the modern world. In addition to the physical health benefits, for those who feed off the view and carry a camera with them, one of the great advantages is undoubtedly the exercise of the gaze.

When we speed up or slow down our pace, the world presents itself in layers. The destination ceases to be important and we begin to inhabit and experience the journey. It is in this deliberate movement that black and white photography is fundamental to painting the perfect picture. When we remove the distraction of color, we are confronted with the essence: light, geometry, shadow, and texture.

In this series of 13 photographs, I sought to combine the rigor of urban signage with the unpredictability of human marks—or their characterization. The streets are full of arrows, lanes, signs, and direction indicators. These are cold elements, designed for order and traffic control. However, when these symbols intersect with human presence or something that identifies it, the picture tends to become captivating.

Walking is, therefore, an exercise in visual search. It is learning to feel the city not as a map of destinations, but as a book of moments. In these images, black and white serves to unite two worlds: the rigor of asphalt with the softness or chaos of life passing by. When walking, I don't just look for the image; I let the signs of life show me which way to go.

Entre geometrias e outras direcções

Para contextualizar esta série de fotografia que partilho no concurso #monomad é importante dizer-vos que no meu dia a dia desloco-me a pé. Não tenho carro, nem tenho licença de condução. Utilizo transportes públicos (bus, Uber ou taxi) apenas quando tenho imperativos de tempo. Por convicção prescindo dessa mordomia, que para muitos é uma necessidade.

Andar a pé é um exercício primário da nossa liberdade e um acto de rebeldia contra a velocidade do mundo moderno. Além dos benefícios físicos para a saude, quem se alimenta do olhar e tem a camera consigo, uma das grandes vantagens é sem dúvida o exercício do olhar.

Quando acelaramos ou abrandamos o andar o mundo apresenta-se em camadas. O destino deixa de ser importante e passamos a habitar e vivenciar o trajecto. É nesse movimento deliberado que a fotografia a preto e branco é fundamental para pintar o quadro perfeito. Quando tiramos a dispersão da cor somos confrontados com a essência: luz, geometria, sombra e textura.

Nesta série de 13 fotografias, procurei cruzar o rigor da sinalética urbana com a imprevisibilidade de marcas humanas - ou sua caracterização. As ruas estão cheias de setas, faixas, sinais e indicadores de direção. São elementos frios, desenhados para a ordem e para o controlo do trânsito. Contudo, quando estes símbolos se cruzam com a presença humana ou algo que a identifica, o quadro tende a torna-se cativante.Caminhar é, portanto, um exercício de busca visual.

É aprender a sentir a cidade não como um mapa de destinos, mas como um livro de momentos. Nestas imagens, o preto e branco serve para unir dois mundos: o rigor do asfalto com a suavidade ou o caos da vida que passa. Ao caminhar, não procuro apenas a imagem; deixo que a sinalética da vida me indique qual o caminho a seguir.
