US Tariffs Demolishing Companies In South Africa

When you look at this graph above it is not so obvious and I will give some export figures later on in this article. Precious metals were tariff exempt so this will have no impact on those exports.
When the US Tariffs went live on the 7th August many thought it would impact themselves with higher costs and make very little difference to world trade. Well guess again as we are talking about a time frame of around 2 months so this is still very early so take a look at some of these figures as this is rather interesting. SA in a few months will be economically crippled and will have no choice, but to change their tune and be begging to negotiate new tariff terms. Maybe wishful thinking if the government will last that long as unemployment is going to sky rocket.
The vehicle market shows stability, but these figures are skewed knowing the vehicle manufacturers sent extra at the beginning of August and were exempt as long as they were on a ship by the 10th. September and October will reveal how bad things are. This was part of the plan as the government is buying the ArcelorMittal steel mill for R8 billion. They have another business partner on board who will run this operation and this is wrapped in secrecy who this is. We all know it has to be Chinese so it will be no shock and surprise when this is revealed. Just to give you an idea what kind of robbery this is the ArcelorMittal steel mill had a value of R116 billion in 2022. Excuse the pun but this is a proper steal and I believe the same plan had been hatched with Goodyear tires that closed down recently.
I digressed a little, but it is interesting to see how crooked these bastards are when you start joining the dots.

Now you can see what I meant about skewed figures for the vehicle exports for August. 276% up looks great on paper, but that is the last of the good days as now the 30% tariff kicks in and we know the next months will not be looking so pretty.
Chemicals and mineral products whatever that might be have been cut by half and the latter by 90% which is a seismic difference. Obviously these items can be purchased elsewhere through countries who do not have such high tariffs and this industry is absolutely screwed and good luck replacing that export business elsewhere.

What is actually quite scary to see is how these figures were looking in August last year and the motor industry was doing alright. Even with their over loaded export orders they were down this year in comparison with the same time last year. This only highlights how big a problem they have on their hands.
Every single industry besides precious metals is down if we exclude iron and steel knowing that steel mill was completing their last orders before turning out the lights. Chemicals and mineral products shows the big shrinkage which will impact the economy through significant job losses.
Many people at the time were saying who cares about the US we have BRICS and now their ideocracy is hitting home. The latest job market figures show over the last year from June 2024 up till June 2025 another 220 000 jobs were lost. This is chicken feed from the figures that are now coming and what makes it even worse is these figures are no doubt manipulated so who knows how bad the unemployment figure is. The 220 000 job losses represents a 2.1% total drop. The last 3 months between March and June has seen 80 000 jobs lost which is a steep increase if 140 000 jobs were lost over the other 9 months.
The ANC government has a lot to answer for and have been gradually making things worse for the people of SA whilst they are scheming to land themselves a big payday. There are no tariffs on Chinese goods flooding the country and if there are any they are not protecting the local economy. This is by design to replace what we have with Chinese industry and the vehicle sector is the big prize. Already discussions are being had with which Chinese car manufacturers will take over which local car manufacturing plants or share the plants.
There is no good news in SA at the moment besides the rugby team as I have mentioned previously land expropriation without compensation has begun. The US could increase these tariffs even further if the SA government follows through with this madness. SA is unfortunately run by a racist, corrupt and crooked government and things will not improve .We were hoping the US tariffs would knock some sense into them, but they are only protecting their own greed at the expense of their people.

Don't mess with the US! :)
Also, in addition to being tariffs exempt precious metals have been rallying this year making it more profitable to export those.
I guess that is one way of looking at this, but will not prevent job losses.
surprising the effect of USA tariffs on Southafrica
Not really as this is just the start and is expected to get far worse.
The increase in the tariff would not do any good to South Africa
