The Value Of Money

source

Over the last few years we have seen the younger generation in our society not understand or appreciate the value of money. From an outsider looking in or an observer it seems that money is too easy to earn and why we see an easy come easy go type thought process. The Lambo people of this world or the everything to the moon type people who clearly have no understanding how life works.

This post on Twitter (X) must have triggered this comment and this is understandable as the value of money for some is non existent whilst it means the world to others. $500 is not that much yet in some places it would be a monthly salary.

I mentioned the other day that $250K or $500K would not be a life changing amount and someone replied that this would be more than enough for them. Yes everything is relevant to where you live and what your goals are in life and for me why would anyone settle for less when there is more to be gained and earned.

I never signed up for the X blue mark as social media is not something I like or enjoy. i am sure some people are making money from this and I am sure many are bots which is why they have apparently changed the X algorithms for payments. When anyone creates a bot account to take advantage of a system this ends up ruining it for everyone else yet this is now considered normal acceptable human behavior today.

When I started out in my career things were really tough and increases were based on performances which they should be. It took years to make any type of head way and you respected those around you. Back then job jumping every 6 months was frowned upon yet it seems normal today and why you have so many people in positions who are not qualified for the role and are over paid.

Times have definitely changed and I have seen the current young generations in action and the expectations are high for very little output. From my viewpoint many are unemployable yet they feel they are deserving of not only employment, but a decent wage. Forget having any experience as I have seen this scenario pay out with graduates thinking a piece of paper gives them an advantage when in fact this is quite the opposite in the real world.

Over the last few years we have taken a policy of hiring no graduates as the expectations are far too high and unrealistic and for some reason think they are better even though they know very little. This attitude is all too common and friends of mine with businesses have a similar policy.

I can recall my daughters friends who all graduated from university complaining that there were no jobs. 6 months prior to that I heard a group talking that they had a minimum expected wage because they were graduates. How about being realistic and finding a job first that will at least give you some work experience even if it not in your chosen field of expertise. I know of two people who had to work doing jobs that had nothing to do with their degrees and the one person ended up becoming a director and is still working there 20 years later and has never used his degree. The other person left their job and the last I heard was they had committed suicide because of not handling failed expectations. Degrees or diplomas do not write the paychecks you do through your actions.

I do think many countries around the world suffer from the real meaning of value with money and a perfect example of that is with the tipping culture in the US. If you believe 20% or 30% is a justified tip size then I would suggest in most cases those individuals are over paid and do not understand the real value of money. Those that have worked hard for their savings do not just give it away and it does not mean they are right or wrong, but value money for what it holds. The way people tip tells you so much about that person as there is a story in what they do.

It is so true that money, whether it seems to be a lot or a little is relative to a person's situation. I also don't think a person should have to over think what they post about money if it is true. You will never please thousands of people all the time and there will always be someone that can find some way to be offended if they want too no matter the subject.

The world seems to encourage jealousy when in fact, we should be happy for anyone, whether we know them well or not, if they have good fortune in some way now and then. That is just how I see it. We should be encourage by it, not offended.

For some reason some of the youngers (not all of course) think with a degree they should be walking out of school and into top dollar in their field. Someone has forgotten to include the part about how you usually need to take less to start with and work up. Sure it has helped in the past in some fields and maybe more than it does now. Sometimes people seem to skip that, but it is usually because of someone they or their family knows that is already established. Somehow there is a little bit of a lack of reality when the idea of a degree is sold. I'm not against a degree whatsoever or several if someone desires it, just that it would be good to look past the hype when the decisions about it are made.

I found your policy for not hiring graduates interesting and wonder how many others feel the same way.

The tipping expectation by some is crazy. I'm old enough to remember when tipping was optional and was a reward for good service. Being a server in a restaurant has always been underpaid by the industry in my opinion and I'm sure that has partially caused today's issue, but some servers believe you should make up for it in the tip, which is not in the nature of what a tip was supposed to be for. Servers believe this now, even if they give lazy service or bad service & etc. (yes I know, not EVERY server) ....but is also why servers that go the extra mile, get more and better tips. You have to EARN that extra. I know, what I just said would not be popular.

I suppose I could have just made the comment, I agree, I agree, I agree!.... instead of writing all of that. LOL.... oh well.... I agree!

I agree lol. Servers need to earn their tip and I do think it should be shared with the kitchen staff etc. I have given zero tips before and actually quite often if the services and food was sub standard and have also given larger tips if it was deserved so it is all relative. I know many businesses that avoid graduates as they will never be happy and job hop ever few months. They can never justify the time or expense training them knowing they will not stay.

ha ha... I'm glad you agree!

I actually think that the cooks or chefs or whatever, should be paid a good wage if they know what they are doing as whether they are good at it or not can make or break a business, so I'm not sure about sharing tips, but I guess if that is low paid too.... that part would not be too fair.

Busboys (girls) I'm not sure of if your only job is to clear tables. Certainly you wouldn't take a job like that and expect a living wage (reasonably). However, I do know some places I have heard that table bussers may leave a server's tables unbussed longer and give others sections faster service so more folks can be seated faster, if the server shares the money they earned. I guess like many other things, there is always an angle to hold over others to get your way. LOL

You would like to think so but if a restaurant doe snot pay their waiting staff the right wage then maybe not. Waiting was never considered a full time job and was never meant to be a living wage and was something students did to earn drinking money. The world is not a normal place these days with no common sense.

I think social media and this exposure to a global audience contributes much to this change of perception with money. There's a lot of flex culture on the internet which for the most part isn't anchored to reality.

There is no reality and if and when things go back to normal many will be crying as there should be no free money and it takes hard work.
