The Good Old Days

I was talking with my brother last night and some of his fondest memories are spending the Saturday mornings visiting different schools in the area and watching the respective team sports. Not only were the matches highly entertaining and competitive, but also the food and drinks were of a high standard normally run by the kids parents. School tuck shops especially in the southern suburbs of Cape Town have always been known to have a high standard.

My old school mates sent this reminder out this morning hoping to lure many of us back to our old school to support todays sporting events. i still stay in contact with most of them who still live in the area and have sent their kids to the same school.

It is funny when you were at school you dreaded every day except weekends and now you kind of miss those days and realise how lucky you were. Very few school kids around the world could have a view like we had which we all took for granted. I moved away so my kids never got to experience what I had and I am sure it would have changed how they ended up. My sons school was never really sporty and I suppose he was not spoiled for choice like we were having the ability to find something you enjoy.

School is what you make of it I guess and there was very little that it taught you in real life skills. If I was being honest the two years I spent in the army made me into a better person and again I complained for the entire two years because I think you were forced to do it and it was not something you would have done voluntary. I just find it ironic that some of the best times and memories in your life are when you you felt hard done by.

Sport in South Africa is a ritual and is something that just happens with every kid involved whether you are good or bad there is a spot for you even if it is in the 10th team making up the numbers. This is not something you see in the UK and why my kids kind of missed out. Over there they tend to join the local sports clubs which is just not the same type of vibe.

I know If I had gone to todays matches I would have met up with roughly 50 of my old school year even if i did not recognize half of them. In the photo above I recognize all of my old mates mainly as I played sport with 4 of them, but if they were walking past me in the street maybe not. It is good to see that they are meeting up regularly and staying in contact.

Over the years you have bonds of friendship formed whether at school, playing sport for a club or being in the army or even in a working environment. The sporting buddies will always stand out above all the others as those were the really enjoyable times that you all shared experiences together.

That IS a beautiful view!

I definitely wished away all my school days. I totally did not appreciate them. I just wanted to be FREE!... of course, that was quite the delusion.

It's nice that ya'll have stayed in contact, even from afar.

I think we all wanted to be free and I was stuck until I turned 21 due to being called up.

Met up with my old school friends 14 years after in 2008 and I must say everything changed and it left kind of a sour taste in my mouth, so I never visited Ukraine after that...

Maybe there was some jealousy on their part. I have 3 or 4 close friends and the rest are acquaintances who I would help if they needed it, but it is the bond that was created during the school days. Sad really how people can change.

Life has a way of making us appreciate the things we took for granted when we were young.
