Formula One Power Unit Grey Area 2026 - Teams Already Complaining Of Cheating

Recently the Formula One teams had a test week in Barcelona where teams could try out their new 2026 regulated cars for the first time. The teams were allowed out on track for 3 of the 5 allotted days having to pick their selected days in advance.
This year the regulations with the Formula One cars have been changed yet again with some major rule changes. The flooring which use to be where all the clever technology was used in order to find more down force has been removed with flat floors now being enforced. The tech now is concentrated on the pods which force the air through the car via various channeling. The car is roughly 30% shorter than the previous Formula One car with drivers now able to deploy a built in extra power button along with changing flexible flap angles to help increase speed for over taking.
The other big talking point is the power units having to not exceed a certain compression threshold. The cars are being tested when the cars are idling and what is obvious is Mercedes and Red Bull have a higher compression than the regulations state when running the car and not idling. This means these two teams have a more powerful power unit than the others as this is all about how you interpret the rules.
This is referred to as a power unit instead of an engine because the power generated is split from 50% combustion and 50% electrical this season. Not sure if this has been achieved but was the intended target being 50/50 this year.
Toto Wolff the principal and co owner of Mercedes Formula One told the other teams to get their shit together and stop complaining. Engineers and designers when tasked with new build regulations will take it to the edge and will spot areas of opportunity. Knowing the compression test is done whilst idling does not state that this is the power limit. If the other 9 teams have missed this then they are going to have to change things quickly as I can assure you Mercedes and Red Bull have far more power than the stated testing regulations.
The only way the other teams have spotted this will be the speeds that these two teams achieved in Barcelona showing the others they are too slow. Mclaren, Alpine and Williams thankfully benefit from this as they are supplied Mercedes engines. This grey area currently benefits 6 teams as Red Bull supply their sister team the Racing Bulls. The teams complaining are in the minority and why nothing will be changed as Mercedes and Red Bull have broken no rules.
This all comes down to how you interpret the rules and if your team is smart enough to read them and see through them. The compression limit was reduced from 18.0 to 16.0 this season when tested at idle, but a car could have a 20.0 compression when racing and still be legal. The extra power being generated will be obvious and why the other teams need to be smarter or they will not compete. This goes for every regulation change and why this sport is at the peak of motoring technology and employ the top engineers in the world. One small advantage found that no other team has spotted could result in a title winning car that is worth over $500 million dollars in prize money so these stakes are seriously high.
