Common Sense Over Dual Citizenship

Yesterday the Constitutional Court Of South Africa declared that this was legal for South Africa citizens to hold dual nationality. Since 1994 those holding dual nationalities were under scrutiny with many losing there citizenship.

When we left the UK in 2004 heading back to SA I was questioned by immigration on landing and had to fight to enter the country. In hindsight me saying I had served in the SA Army was not the best move and may have angered then some more. My wife had her SA passport with a stamp saying she could remain in the UK indefinitely. She had not applied for a British passport even though she was fully entitled to do so and I believe if she had dual citizenship holding a British passport we would have been denied entry.

The SA government stance was if you apply to be a citizen of other country then you must relinquish your SA citizenship even if you were born in SA. This goes against the constitution of SA especially going back to apartheid days when someone's identity was their right. This is what they fought for as being recognized as an equal citizen and here they are trying to take this right away from others.

I do believe it is a jealousy thing as in all truth the SA passport gets you nowhere in the world besides entry into places no one else wants to visit. The idea that a SA citizen could hold another passport is something they would love to have themselves, but can't. This and I am not being racist is seen as a white thing (privilege's) ad they do not like the fact we can travel freely between countries.

The right to citizenship is enshrined in section 20 of the Constitution, which is part of the Bill of Rights. Case law, Majiedt noted, has recognised the importance of citizenship in the context of the “maleficent historical deprivation of citizenship” during apartheid.

I just find it sad and ironic that the country fought so hard for their freedom yet they want to impose penalties on those who have ancestral rights or birth rights as in my case holding more than one passport.

The idea you have to apply to the SA government for permission to hold joint /dual citizenship is crazy ad commo sense has prevailed. The government and their ideologies of control will not be happy with this ruling and there is nothing they can say or do.

The good news is I can move forward with my grand kids British passports which I was doing any way as this was a no brainer. My wife is also entitled to a British passport so that is also on the cards for this year as I am sick and tired of applying and paying for visas. I was planning on doing this anyway and was oblivious to this court case. I will have 3 passports with a British, SA and an Irish passport arriving shortly. Irish was never deemed necessary, but now after Brexit it makes sense to have a British and Irish passport.
