Fly Fishing with a Hazy IPA
The weather has been beautiful so we are spending some time at the cabin so I thought it would be a great time to get some fishing in. I just got into fly fishing so I have been trying to hit every river and lake I can during my spare time.
I ended up setting my pole up for some bluegill which have always been pretty easy to catch on my spin reel.
I also decided to bring out a hazy IPA by a small brewery called Stone Hound. Chadillacs Beard Zone is a heck of name, but this was a delicious beer. Smooth, chewy and juicy with an intense fruitiness from a trifecta of Galaxy, Citra and Mosaic hops.
I got plenty of notes of zesty tangerine, ripe mango, and a hint of white grape. It was refreshing as I hung out in the middle of the lake. I ended up staying out pad dusk so the hot sun really was beating down for a bit and this beer was enough to keep me out fishing.
The bluegill were biting like crazy as the sun was setting down. I ended up landing several and hooking into twice as many. These are beautiful fish and fun to pull in on a fly rod. I have switched over to barbless hooks which is an all new fishing experience for those of us not accustomed to them.
I can’t wait to get out and try for some trout in the local streams. With the weather report for this next weekend I’m sure there will be more beer drinking and fishing.

what a catch
Thanks I have a bunch of more photos.
Some fish catching is not that bad
It's a great hobby.
Galaxy, mosaic, citra AND fishing? Oh hell yah! I choose lighter session ales usually for daytime activities like this but would make an exception for that one!
Cheers!
It's all I had in the fridge outside of some stouts. I don't keep the cabin stocked with too many IPAs as they loos their fresh taste.
That's a nice fish! Bluegill are great to catch. That sounds like a great IPA, I've never tried it before. I'll have to keep my eyes open next time I'm beer shopping, thanks!
They were decent size and it's such a good feeling to pull them in on a fly rod.
It always is! I love Bluegill, fun to catch and taste good too!
Cheers to that
Very nice. I have only been fly fishing once. I took a fly tying class and it was really fun, then they took us out and we were able to do some fishing and practice in a pond. It was a really great experience. This looks like a perfect day!
It's a really fun but expensive sport. I feel like I'm fishing with a bunch of doctors and lawyers every time I go the the local fly shop. I have been getting out 1-2 a week to practice or actually fish so I'd say it's a new hobby.
I'm with you. That is part of the reason I haven't dove into it too deeply. I already have some pretty expensive hobbies!
I hear that lol!
I love fly fishing and hazy IPAs, so this post was right up my alley. I've never tried the beer you mentioned, but I'll have to keep an eye out for it. Thanks for sharing!
It's a pretty small brewery but so keep your eyes out. What do you fish for?
To have some feast during festivities.
In this way, catching fish and cooking it yourself at night has its own fun and your drink looks so tasty. Cheers.
Right now I'm a catch and release fisherman. I have eaten caught fish in the past but find more enjoyment out of the experience if I release them.
This is also rightly said by you in this way a human can get a lot of happiness.
Fly fishing is the bomb. When I was a kid, I used to watch an older man fly fish after I was done fishing. Long story short, he ended up giving me a rod he had made and taught me how to make flies. It was great
That's a cool story. I have some old bamboo rods from my grandpa but I'd be afraid they would break if I used them.
What a fantastic day, thanks for the share.
It was good. I have more fishing planned for this weekend!
Nice dude! Would love to try that beer sometime and man do I miss fishing on the lakes and rivers. Don’t get me wrong, the ocean is nice....but can be so damn brutal.
I have never fished the ocean but some of those bigger fish look amazing. The water like you said is brutal and I actually get sea sick so I'll stick to rivers and lakes.
