Summer Barbecue, Cold Beer, and Everyday Brazilian Traditions

Today is Christmas Eve and I just got back from lunch. Besides having today’s meal out, I still needed to stop by the supermarket, and believe me when I say it was chaos! It seems everyone decided to leave everything for the last minute, as always, a true Brazilian stereotype. But one thing caught my attention: there was no more availability of Coca-Cola in returnable bottles. I repeat and emphasize: returnable.

This made me think that many people must have joined this type of consumption, with returnable bottles. I thought that was very good. But I was without the precious liquid, so it was necessary to visit another market. This is not part of the Christmas dinner, but I needed to prepare for the next day, after all, markets close on the Christmas holiday.

Brazil is a tropical country, and at Christmas we are at the peak of summer. So you can assume that our Santa Claus doesn’t really like heavy and warm clothes. Here we like barbecue, cold beer, sun, heat, and the beach. Since I live far from the beach, Christmas will only have the heat and the cold beer part.

Barbecue is not necessarily the main dish of our Christmas, but there are certainly many families who will have this meal at lunch on December 25th. Brazil consumes a lot of meat, and we follow this pattern. So at lunch on the 25th we will have our own private and family barbecue.

I don’t know how I could manage if I could no longer eat meat!
Protein is the flagship of our meals, and only in extremely rare cases do we not consume meat in our family. For us, it is an unthinkable scenario! Even though a medical condition could make us reduce meat consumption, it could by no means stop completely. We are far too used to it. It’s like asking to stop breathing, it’s something impossible!

Our Christmas barbecue still hasn’t had the meats bought yet, because we can buy fresh cuts at the butcher shop. So there is no reason to rush... on the morning of the 25th we will decide what to do. But since we have Christmas dinner on the 24th, there may be leftovers, and in this case I will need to evaluate if it is enough for lunch, I can leave our barbecue for the 26th. It’s always good to be mindful and optimize household resources, and that includes preparing meals in a way that avoids wasting food.

An interesting option, if the weather helps and we have a hot sunny day, is that I can make burgers on the grill. In this case we like to buy artisanal burgers, which are sold in ready-made kits with four burger patties, buns, cheese, and sauce. When I light the fire in the barbecue grill, I use reclaimed wood that I have at home. This helps to be more sustainable. I also try not to overdo the amount of fire, and not to waste anything.

It may not exactly be a tradition, but it is certainly a good family moment, and it fits very well to be done during Christmas time. We wish everyone an excellent end of year, and may the approaching new year bring much health and happiness. I couldn’t help but wish for a boom in the price of HIVE, and see you next year!

Hoje é véspera de natal e acabei de voltar do almoço. Além de fazer a refeição de hoje fora de casa, ainda precisava passar no mercado, e acredite quando eu digo que estava um caos! Parece que todo mundo resolveu deixar tudo para a última hora, como sempre, um verdadeiro estereótipo do brasileiro. Mas uma coisa me chamou atenção: não havia mais disponibilidade de Coca-Cola em garrafas retornáveis. Repito e enfatizo: retornáveis.

Isso me fez pensar que muita gente deve ter aderido à essa modalidade de consumo, com casco retornável. Achei muito bom. Mas eu estava sem o líquido precioso, então foi preciso visitar outro mercado. Isso não é parte da ceia, mas precisava preparar o dia seguinte, afinal os mercados fecham no feriado de natal.

O Brasil é um país tropical, e no nosso natal estamos no auge do verão. Então você pode supor que o nosso papai noel não gosta muito de roupas pesadas e quentinhas. Aqui gostamos de churrasco, cerveja gelada, sol, calor e praia. Como eu moro longe da praia, o natal vai ter a parte do calor e da cerveja gelada apenas.

O churrasco não é necessariamente o prato principal do nosso natal, mas certamente existem muitas famílias que irão fazer essa refeição no almoço do dia 25 de dezembro. O Brasil consome muita carne, e nós seguimos nesse padrão. Então no almoço do dia 25 faremos nosso churrasco particular e familiar.

Não sei como poderia fazer se não pudesse mais comer carne!
A proteína é o carro chefe das nossas refeições e apenas em casos extremamente raros não consumimos carne na nossa família. Para nós, é um cenário impensável! Ainda que uma condição médica poderia fazer com que reduzisse o consumo de carne, mas de forma alguma poderia cessar completamente. Estamos acostumados demais. É como pedir para parar de respirar, é algo impossível!

Nosso churrasco de natal ainda não teve as carnes compradas, pois podemos comprar cortes frescos no açougue. Então, não há motivo para precipitação... na manhã do dia 25 iremos decidir o que fazer. Mas como temos ceia de natal no dia 24 pode ser que sobrem alimentos, e neste caso vou precisar avaliar se for suficiente para o almoço posso deixar o nosso churrasco para o dia 26. É sempre bom ser consciente e otimizar os recursos da casa, isso inclui fazer as refeições de forma a não desperdiçar alimentos.

Uma opção interessante, se o clima ajudar e tivermos um dia quente de sol, é que posso fazer hamburguer na grelha. Neste caso gostamos de comprar hamburguer artesanal, que são vendidos em kits prontos com quatro unidades de hamburguer, pão, queijo e molho. Quando acendo o fogo na churrasqueira, uso madeira de demolição que tenho em casa. Isso ajuda a ser mais sustentável. Também procuro não exagerar na quantidade de fogo, e não desperdiçar nada.

Não chega a ser uma tradição, mas certamente é um bom momento em família, e fica muito bem para ser realizado nos tempos natalinos. Desejamos a todos um excelente final de ano, que o novo ano que se aproxima seja de muita saúde e felicidade. Não poderia deixar de desejar um boom no preço da HIVE, e nos vemos ano que vem!
