From Power to Prison: The Rise, Fall, and Conviction of a Brazilian President

Brazil is a recent, young, and inexperienced democracy. We have had this political configuration since 1988 with the publication of the current (and amended) Constitution of the Federative Republic of Brazil. It brought civil guarantees and also the election for president, which took place in 1989, with the mandate beginning in 1990 — the year I consider democracy to have returned to the country.

In our first election after the military dictatorship, Fernando Collor de Mello was elected president. He became known for the slogan “Hunter of Maharajas”, which does not mean much if you know the story in which he himself was hunted (in fact, I believe he resigned) due to major corruption allegations involving his campaign treasurer, Paulo Cesar Farias, or PC Farias for Brazilians, who was obviously found dead and could not contribute to the proceedings.

Fernando Collor de Mello is an example of hypocrisy, as what he said publicly was the opposite of what he practiced. He was prosecuted and had his political rights revoked. He stayed away from politics for many years and, like any good trickster, returned to the scene of the crime. This gentleman, already worn down by age, ran for senator for the state of Alagoas (if I am not mistaken) and was elected.

Thus, he returned to the public stage, receiving both attention and discredit from the media and the Brazilian people.

This was remarkable, because thanks to his exposure as a public figure, serving as a senator of the republic, he made headlines again in 2023 when the Supreme Federal Court (STF) sentenced Fernando Collor de Mello to 8 years and 10 months in prison for passive corruption and money laundering in developments of Operation Car Wash, the investigative operation that devastated Brazil’s traditional political structure.

Collor was accused of receiving R$20 million at the time (today about 29 million BRL / 5.6 million USD) in bribes to facilitate contracts at BR Distribuidora, a fuel distributor that was formerly state-owned but was sold in 2021.

Petrobras concluded the privatization of BR Distribuidora in July 2021, selling its last stake in the company for about R$11.3 billion, ending state control. The company was renamed Vibra Energia (VBBR3), focusing on efficiency, but retained the right to use the Petrobras brand until 2029.

But it was in 2025 that we saw the former president and former senator being arrested.

Unfortunately, the heirs of the old and rotten politics truly need to move on to another plane. Their social engineering of backroom deals, agreements, exchanges, and favors no longer has space in a society where public spending is transparent. No one can hide anymore. We hope that the famous surnames of old politicians will disappear from the media and the ballots, giving space to the NEW (not the party!).

At the same time, we also need people to take an interest in participating in politics and occupying these spaces. As we know, in the case of women, there are minimum quotas within parties, and often there are not enough interested candidates to fill them. Young people also need to be integrated into the discussion and occupy spaces to bring new perspectives focused on the new world we are living in — a society so different from the one our parents left us!

O Brasil é uma democracia recente, jovem, e inexperiente. Temos essa configuração política desde 1988 com a publicação da atual (e remendada) Constituição da República Federativa do Brasil. Ela trouxe as garantias civis e também a eleição para presidente, que veio a ocorrer em 1989, e tendo assumido o mandato em 1990, que então é o ano que considero que a democracia voltou ao país.

Em nossa primeira eleição após a ditadura militar, foi eleito como presidente *Fernando Collor de Mello. Ele ficou conhecido pelo borão Caçador de Marajás, que não tem muito significado se você souber da história em que ele mesmo foi caçado (na verdade acho que ele renunciou) devido a grandes denúncias de corrupção envolvendo seu tesoureiro da campanha, chamado Paulo Cesar Farias, ou *PC Farias para os brasileiros, que obviamente foi encontrado sem vida e não pode contribuir no processo.

Fernando Collor de Mello é um exemplo da hipocrisia, pois o que dizia da boca para fora era o contrário do que praticava. Foi processado e teve seus direitos políticos cassados. Ficou afastado da política por muitos anos, e como todo bom malando, retornou ao local do crime. Esse senhor, já abatido pela idade, lançou-se como candidato à senador, pelo estado do Alagoas (se não me engano), e foi eleito.

Assim retornou ao palco público, recebendo toda a atenção e o desprestígio da mídia e do povo brasileiro.

Isso foi maravilhoso, pois graças a sua exposição como figura pública, no cargo de senador da república, virou manchete nos jornais novamente em 2023 quando o Supremo Tribunal Federal (STF) condenou Fernando Collor de Mello a 8 anos e 10 meses de prisão por corrupção passiva e lavagem de dinheiro em desdobramentos da Lava Jato, operação investigativa que destroçou a política clássica brasileira.

Collor foi acusado de receber R$20 milhões de Reais na época (hoje cerca de 29 milhões BRL / 5,6 milhões USD) em propinas para facilitar contratos na BR Distribuidora de combustíveis, antigamente uma estatal, mas que foi vendida em 2021.

A Petrobras concluiu a privatização da BR Distribuidora em julho de 2021, vendendo sua última fatia na empresa por cerca de R$ 11,3 bilhões, encerrando o controle estatal. A companhia foi rebatizada como Vibra Energia (VBBR3), focando em eficiência, mas manteve o direito de uso da marca Petrobras até 2029.

Mas foi em 2025 que vimos o ex-presidente, ex-senador da república, sendo preso.

Um currículo de respeito, junto aos criminosos.
Acusado, condenado, preso, e só sairá de casa para o cemitério.

Infelizmente os herdeiros da velha e podre política, precisam de fato passar para o outro plano astral. Suas engenharias sociais de negociatas, acordos, trocas e favores, não tem mais espaço na sociedade onde há transparência nos gastos públicos. Ninguem mais consegue se esconder. Esperamos que os sobrenomes famosos dos políticos antigos sejam extintos das mídias e das urnas, dando espaço ao NOVO (não o partido!)

Ao mesmo tempo também precisamos que as pessoas se interessem por participar da política e ocupar esses espaços, como sabemos no caso das mulheres que tem cotas mínimas nos partidos, e muitas vezes não tem com quem preencher, por falta de interessadas. Os jovens também precisam ser integrados na discussão e ocupar espaços para trazer novos olhares voltados ao novo mundo que estamos vivendo, uma sociedade tão distinta daquela que nossos pais nos deixaram!
