Babies. So soft and cuddly. So docile and naive. So innocent. We like to portray baby animals as the epitome of cuteness and all that is good in the world, basking in our ignorance over the truth about what most babies are:
Food.
Babies are easy pickin's. Tender meat. Babies are snatched up from their oblivious bliss, ripped to shreds, and turned into sweet vittles for other babies.
Baby bunnies feeding baby foxes, baby foxes feeding baby wolves, baby wolves feeding baby bears, baby bears feeding baby wolves, baby deer feeding baby coyotes, baby squirrels feeding baby crows, baby crows feeding baby owls, baby owls feeding baby raccoons, baby raccoons feeding baby eagles and on and on and on, with the most precious and best fed baby-eating babies growing up to commit their own ruthless infanticide in this beautiful circle of life.

It is just how nature works, so sad from our perspective and empathy, but without that what seems to be cruel sighting and deeds, they will not survive.

Oh, come on. You know you want to waltz through the forest while songbirds flitter about scattering flowers along your path and small woodland creatures perform choreographed dances. Don't worry, they do not lead you to a sacrificial altar in a forgotten glade dedicated to the Old Ones.
I mean, that kind of already happens for me anyway, except for the part where while I am off waltzing at work or in bed or on the computer and the babies of my flittering, flower-scattering friends get picked off one by one by invisible monsters.
