Napoleon Hill once said, "Competition is the whetstone on which one sharpens their skills.

Every sector you find yourself in today, you find people competing for similar goals, be it in the education sector, government, business, sports, or even in nature. Competition exists.

In my opinion, competition exists to bring out the best in an individual or an entity, and that's the reason in some specific fields like sports there are awards for the best performances.

Competition is the process of trying to win something by outperforming others in a particular field of interest. Competition can be a source of motivation, which can enhance work efficiency and productivity.

Big companies like the likes of Coca-Cola have been around for many decades, yet they still spend money on adverts because they have competition, and the moment they slack, their customers' loyalty would be bought by other competitors out there; hence the saying, "The world has seen so much excellence it doesn't give room for mediocrity."

Ayn Rand said, "Competition is a by-product of productivity and not its work. A creative man is motivated by the desire to achieve, not by the desire to beat others." So healthy competition would be a byproduct of the following:

Excellence and growth

When the quality of service rendered by an organization is geared towards growth and excellence, then their model will definitely be copied by other individuals and organizations, and if you follow in the footsteps of a successful person, most assuredly success becomes the destination.

Innovation

In the face of competition, entities have to stay innovative by thinking and coming up with new ways to maintain customers loyalty and also achieve new goals and desires because if you can think it, anything is possible, so in the face of competition, innovation thrives.

Creativity and Problem Solving

In the face of challenges, individuals and entities who are creative and have solutions for real-world problems are highly sought after. This is the reason you see some very productive individuals working in two multinational companies.

Healthy competition is not geared towards the downfall of another entity, but rather healthy competition is concerned with staying relevant. Come to think of it, how have all the different brands of all the similar products like toothpaste, noodles, and others been able to keep their customers loyal if not by coming up with new, innovative ways to constantly keep those customers?

Recently I got talking with a friend about how many of the business owners around my school come to their offices very late and tend to leave very early and also about the fact that the water factory around here would sometimes tell you that they didn't produce water simply because there was no light when they have a huge generating set, and we simply came to a conclusion, which is the fact that those businesses don't have rivals makes them very relaxed; otherwise, they would be on their toes trying to do whateverit takes to make sure their businesses are fully functional.

Because, take for example, another water factory is available, and they know not producing can lead to the loss of customers, then they will go out of their way to make sure they are able to meet up with demand.

Having said that, it is important to know that not all competition is right. For example, you see a person doing a new business venture when you have an already existing business in a location, and because you feel that person is making sales, you start such a business most times withouteven prior study of the business, and this has made some people jacks of all trades and masters of none.

Furthermore, the kind of competition that is driven by selfishness, envy, and rage and aimed at bringing the other person down is an unhealthy competition and evil. This kind of competition is often played out in the political sectors today.

In finding the balance, people must be growth-oriented rather than selfishly oriented and should be more concerned with producing excellent results because excellence has a way of attracting people to itself.
