Beyond abolish how slavery still exists

It is no longer news the slave trade was officially stopped many years ago, but it is quite unfortunate that, one way or another, people are involved in the unlawful act of slave trade.

Back in the days when slave trade was official and legal, slaves had to go through much physical, emotional, mental, and psychological abuse, just to mention a few. Slave masters had the sole right of ownership, which made them do as they pleased with the slaves.

Fast forward to the post-slave trade, we find that one way or anotherpeople still find ways by which they engage in this inhuman act. In no particular order, here are some ways by which people engage in the unlawful act of slave trade.

1. Child Hawking: Most times you see children on the streets hawking things, sometimes in the market and other times by the roadside, and we have seen cases where some of these children become victims of rape and child molestation because they are not mature enough and are not educated.

2. House help palava: This is the situation whereby wealthy families go to the villages or rural areas to pick up children or even young adults who are uneducated, sometimes with promises of sending them to school or some incentives for the family, but we often find some of such kids working endless hours doing house chores and manual labor behind the closed doors of those mansions.

3. The prostitution saga This is found mostly in some parts of the country where some rich folks who run brothels come home with promises of taking young adults and children to the city for greener pastures, but in the real sense, they use those children and young adults for prostitution. Some of them are even sent to foreign countries for the purpose of prostitution, and the female gender are the most victims here.

The list of ways by which most of these modern-day slave trades are perpetuated is quite endless, but I want to talk about some of the solutions to it.

Firstly, the main cause of this slave trade is poverty and unemployment. The rate of poverty in this present day makes it always very irresistible when some of these people involved in this act make some very good offers to families, and this makes most of the families involved think of one less mouth to feed and therefore they are willing to allow these victims to be carried away by these evil people.

The only way this can be eradicated is by job creation; this will make some of the parents able to cater to their wards.

Education is another important way by which this modern-day slave trade can be stopped because when people are educated, you give them power to make informed choices.

Government policies as they concern human rights and strict measures to ensure that defaulters are duly punished within the confines of governing laws that totally eradicate the possibility of modern-day slave trade.

The fact that people have their private business, which is not under any form of checks, and also the low level of activity in the persecution of human rights offenses makes the possibility of totally eradicating this illegal act low, but with the right level of awareness and poverty alleviation, it can totally be achieved, but it will take the active cooperation of everyone.
