The Holidays vibes in downtown Chicago and the Christkindlmarket

Happy New Year, Hive people!!

My Christmas and New Year's this year were a little different from our family traditions since, due to some circumstances, the three of us couldn't be together for this Holidays, so my husband and I decided that I would visit my son in Chicago for Christmas. We've had an incredible few days, even though we missed to be together the three of us. But my holiday break is over and tomorrow I have to go back.

To start the year, I want to share a little bit of the magic of Chicago in December. A few weeks ago, when I first arrived, we made our first visit to Downtown.

The Chicago River and the buildings around it looked majestic at dusk. And luckily, when we crossed one of the bridges over the river, we caught a glimpse of the Chicago subway, known as the L, decorated with lights for the holidays.

Let me get a little closer so you can see the L with its Christmas lights.

We were on our way to Portillo's to eat a Chicago-style hot dog, which I'll show you one of these days;)

After having a couple of hot dogs, we walked along the Loop to Daley Plaza to visit the Christkindlmarket, Chicago's traditional German-style Christmas market.

The market was packed with people, even though it wasn't a weekend.

But despite the crowds, we managed to have a cup of Glühwein, a spiced mulled wine traditionally drunk in Germany and other European countries in winter, and especially at Christmas markets.

It was delicious, and we have the cups as a souvenir of these special days.

After browsing around the market stalls, we headed out onto the street.

But not before taking a few more photos of the market from outside.

In the square where the market is held, there is a sculpture by Picasso. Can you see it?

.

From there we went to see the Chicago's Christmas tree, which is put up every year in Millennium Park. It was beautiful and huge with its dazzling lights!

A closer look at the magnificent Christmas tree and a view of Michigan Avenue in this part of the Loop.

Our next stop was a traditional pub in Chicago's Loop, but I'll tell you more about that next Beer Saturday.

To wrap things up for today and get the year off to a good start at Hive, a little power up at the beginning of the month. Happy HPUD!

Omg, tall buildings everywhere! I never seen such massive building in my whole life. I feel like if I look up, I will be to dizzy to admire it for a long minutes. You really enjoy your stay there, though I'm sure those days is not enough to enjoy it more with your son. Anyway HAPPY NEW YEAR 🌼💃🌟

The city and the buildings are impressive, but the most special thing was being able to spend a few days with my son, whom I hadn't seen for a year.

Happy New Year! My best wishes to you and your family for this new year 🤗🌱

Those first two photos look like they were made by AI! You were in the right place at the perfect time, as the first photo, with Christmas lights on the buildings, looks awesome! It will be tough to get back to the ordinary routine after the vacation, but you have a lot of great memories to keep you "warm" until the next ones!

Have a great 2026, and all the best to you and your family!

Hey!! How are you? Sorry for the late reply. Yes, that day was just as you describe it: being in the right place at the right time. The other times I went there, the sky was gray and cloudy. I was lucky that day.

This year, with the news from Venezuela, it's been difficult to get back into the routine, but yes I do have unforgettable memories of the holidays.

Thank you for the support and for picking my blog to OurPick :)

May 2026 bring you and your family good health, happiness, and prosperity. Cheers!

All good on this side! Thanks for asking...

This year, with the news from Venezuela, it's been difficult to get back into the routine, but yes I do have unforgettable memories of the holidays.

I suppose when things settle down, it should be easier to travel abroad?

Yes, for sure, it will be easier. Venezuela main airport has a strategic situation in the continent, if things settle down that will be a major change.

I still plan to go to Venezuela at the end of next month. I hope that by then things will be more stable. Right now there is a lot of uncertainty. People are afraid, there is still a lot of repression and people fear being arrested, that and the economic situation, which has become worse in recent months. But there is hope that better times will come soon, something we didn't have before.

Happy New Year Super Eli and safe trip to Bogota!
You know I thought there would be snow everywhere. Glad you got to see a Christmas market with some of the Glühwein. I am curious to see prices, we went to Edinburgh's Christmas market again this year and it was a ripoff, but then again the prices the vendors get charged to hire the huts is ridiculous. It is all aimed at fleecing the tourist, as the locals don't really go them!

I love that Christmas tree though, a proper tree! It is great that you got to see your wee boy, hehe I know he probably towers over you now!

Lang may yer lum reek querida 😘💙😘

Hola, Super Ed!

Sorry for the late reply. These days, the news and what's happening in Venezuela have me completely distracted.

The snow came later, during my last week there, hehe. The market prices were high; everything seemed so expensive to me! We only had Glühwein because, since we were there, we couldn't pass up the chance to try it.

My little one is a man who is two heads taller than me, but he's fine, and even though I miss him very much, that makes me happy and gives me peace of mind.

Abrazos, querido!

Yes I keep looking for news, but it seems to be quiet in our media. Yes the markets are a ripoff, but then again they charged a fortune to rent the huts too!
Well I am glad you went and saw him and have peace of mind querida 💙

Dear Jelena, happy new year! My best wishes to you and your family. I hope everyone is doing very well.
I'm fine, I'm currently in Colombia. My family and friends in Venezuela are well and safe. But we are all very concerned about the situation, there is a lot of uncertainty, but all we can do is be patient, take care, and wait.

A big hug and thank you for stopping by 🤗😘
