A Place With Legend, Mystery and Beauty

1000007389.jpg

Hello friends and Hivians. You ever lived somewhere and never knew about a particular place? Well I'm on vacation now and I searched for things to do where I grew up at. I came across Devil's Gulch a place in Garrestson, South Dakota which is just over 50 miles where I lived the first 20 years of my life. It amazes me for me one, that I havent been here before and two I didnt know it existed! I have visited another place in this small town a few times in the past which was within a few miles from it. Anyways let me share my journey of this place.

The place was formed by erosion from Split Rock creek eating through Quartzite rock. This particular rock is hard and of a pinkish color and is very plentiful at many other sites in this part of the state. I tell you I like the Native American legend more on how the place was formed better. According to thier old legend, two warriors were having a tomahawk throwing contest. When they both tossed thier tomahawks, the earth started to tremble splitting the rock and the canyon appeared. From then they referred to it as Spirit Canyon.

Well first off I thought this would be a walk in the park. It's really an intermediate hiking experience with dirt paths, small hills and some bigger steps needed to get up and down rocks. I wore sandals and I wouldn't recommend doing that. I came out with no injuries but did feel I got a good work out.

1000007393.jpg

1000007403.jpg

The entrance point is walking bridge across the gulch. Its also the apparent place where legend has it that outlaw Jesse James jumped across it on horseback while having a posse of lawman hot on his trail in the fall of 1876 after robbing a Minnesota bank. The distance is about 20 feet across. Some think it happened while others think it would have been impossible. I have my thoughts what do you believe? Being on top of gulch it seems unlikely but being on the creek floor it looks not as far. I will say being at the bottom I couldn't help but imagining gun shots echoing through out.

1000007399.jpg

The mystery is how deep was the creek. Many years ago the creek depths was measured by plumb line being over 600 feet deep. Well a lot of erosion and silt has shallowed out the creek now. Some say they ran out of plumb line and the depth at the time was left unknown. A mystery for sure but no date is given when this was done. I guess this only adds to mystery.

This place surprised me as there was so much to explore. I like to think I seen a majority of it but there was a point I turned around and back tracked but came out a long distance from where I entered. Numerous forks some leading to view points some to a dead ends some to different trails. Again if your ever in this area and want to visit wear shoes not sandals!

The place does showcase quite a bit of beautiful nature. Prior to the small water fall stones line the creek bed for a far as the eyes can see. Well further than I cared to skip and walk on. This area was called Devil's Ford. The sounds of birds, small game animals present, wind passing through the gulch and sounds I just could not figure out.

Beyond the outskirts of Devil's Gulch is a much wider healthier looking creak in Split Rock Creek Park. Some more beauitful nature along with a man-made waterfall. Overlooking the water fall is a mansion of a house!

This was a great adventure and the costs was free to wallet. This was my first travel adventure on a week long vacation I'm on. Well no plans tomorrow but I will figure out something to see. I really look foward to Saturday as I fly to Boston, Massachusetts. May here from me next about that trip if not maybe one from my Friday.

Take care, stay safe and enjoy the upcoming weekend.

Yes I was impressed with the place. The other place I have visited which is just a few miles away is neat to but you have to pay entrance. Probably because camping and swimming is done there.

Im glad you like the Native's story I got a kick out of that. They saw the place as kind of a worship place while the new white people seen it as stopping point for crops.

The legend is a neat thing that the town has held onto. The jump I wouldn't think would be possible. Well more possible if it was a horse from Spain, right jaja?

Have a great weekend as well Amiga.

Why not? Jaja
Native people had a different view of life and it's curious how difficult is to understand that other perspective and culture for white people.
Happy Friday and weekend!

The photos make me want to go there, especially the rocky riverbed. The sound of flowing water and the gentle breeze must be so relaxing...

Hope your trip to Boston goes smoothly! Can't wait for your next adventure, my friend 🤙

Yes as I was moving through the landscape I heard flowing water but couldn't see it until I was almost near it. Made the walk a little bit more exciting.

Thank you, Oh Boston will be fun I have a handful of things planned. Thanks for stopping by and have a great day!

Yes, that's right, my friend! The sound of trickling water, which you can hear but not see, arouses curiosity and makes the adventure even more exciting. It's like a treasure hunt 🤩. Follow the sound until you find it 😅!

Bye, and we look forward to seeing more exciting stories from Boston! 🌟Have a great day, my friend! ✈️

Ohooo, you are enjoying your vacation in there ha. And about your question, there's a actually more place in our town that I haven't explore. And when I discovered them online, my reaction was "we have that in bansud?" Haha. I'm surprised but I am really just to lazy to explore the place. Lol

Anyways happy for you, you discover that place during a vacation. At least you can do something new in there no, and even enjoy a place you never been to before. The place looks really pretty. It's the kind where you'll enjoy a walk peacefully. It is surrounded with greens. Uwu

Its great to find places to visit despite them being close. It just shows the world may not be as small as many think. Theres always something new to explore.

The place is a neat piece of nature. A lot of beautiful wild flowers too with a butt load of pollinators. So many green trees and how do some grow out of rocks? A good journey of exploring which also left me to a shower later on, haha.

Take care and have a great day. Go visit your unknowns :)

Definitely looks like a place worth visiting. I suppose a
20 foot jump is humanly possible, but it would take a brave man to make that jump... Or one being chased by bullets!

The surface of the ground and the horse probably worn out by getting chased by the posse. It would have had to be a 25 foot jump or longer for the horse to clear its rear legs. Than there is that most horses wont jump a great distance until they see it first. Haha I revealed what I believe. The second bridge later in the post looks very plausible this one at the entrance I dont think so 🤔

At last hehehe. The much waited vacation. How mysterious the creek is, upon zooming it I even think maybe there are creatures living underneath😬.

Hehe I know my longest absence I think you wrote 3 since I have last. Well I was observant if the water. I only see frogs jumping in never seen any fish. Maybe there is some devil like fish lurking in the Gulch. I did witness an angry squirrel in a tree that hissed at me. I had to go under that tree, was hoping he wasnt going to be part of my hair due 😆 I did pass by it rather quickly 🏃‍♂️

Hehehe. Lucky on the other side it was bright and no sign of any mysterious creatures. 😆😆

What an interesting discovery! The fact that it was so close to you all this time and you just found it is even more interesting. A combination of the beauties of nature and historical legends.

Yes a place to see for sure and the historic legend there makes it a nitch better IMO. My younger self would not have spent as much time there.

The place now looks quite filled with the voice of people in the past and now it's a historical place.... I wonder if I saw the statue of a man's face on the wall

Sometimes it happens to us too that we have lived in the city for years but don't know about the place

Yes it can make your imagination go wild. Especially hearing the sound the wind makes when your at creek level.

Oh yes I went to a state park just minutes from it on the same body of water a few times. I was younger of course and went there to climb and jump off cliffs, the water was much deeper in the other place. I wasnt really an adventurer back than but a thrill seeker 😆

Sometimes we don't have to leave our backyard to find something new and interesting... 🙂 Regarding the explanations of how "something got somewhere", I also prefer the "mouth to mouth" stories, aka legends... It's much easier to memorize them, and they sound so obvious and believable... almost... 😃

The area looks super pleasant for a walk, and even for a summer walk, as I can see many places in the forest, but the river... Speaking of which, is it allowed to swim in the river? I suppose it's not deep (except that wide part), but still, it could be great to cool down... 😃

Haha legend stories are nice to take in. We have a show in the States called Myth busters I should write into them and ask them to take a look into it. They test the stories by recreating and such. Now they wouldnt jump this cliff though but would see how far a good horse can jump or talk to people who jump horses.

No swimming or fishing this stretch in the Gulch but the area I photographed later in the post you can do both. There's also an area that has 50 to 75 foot rock cliffs where you can jump into the water.

Thanks for the appreciation and your pick:)
